EXAMPLE Evaluate an Algebraic Expression
1. Evaluate h – 9 if h = 13.
h – 9 = 13 – 9
Replace h with 13.
=4

2. Evaluate 6m + 3n if m = 4 and n = 2.
6m + 3n = 6(4) + 3(2)
Replace m with 4 and n with 2.
= 24 + 6
Do all multiplications first.
= 30
Add 24 and 6.
3. Evaluate 3p2 – 5 if p = 4.
3p2 – 5 = 3(42) - 5
= 3(16) – 5
= 43
Replace p with 4.
Evaluate the power.
Multiply, then subtract.
Real-World EXAMPLE
4. PRODUCTION The cost of producing a personalized T-shirt is given by the expression
4.25 + 0.35 where
represents the number of letters put on the shirt. Use the
expression to find the production cost for a T-shirt personalized with 11 letters.
4.25 + 0.35
= 4.25 + 0.35(11)
= 4.25 + 3.85
= 8.10
Replace
with 11.
Multiply 0.35 and 11.
Add.
The cost of producing a T-shirt personalized with 11 letters is $8.10.
