Lab3: Build An Atom PhET Lab
Introduction: Atoms are the smallest things that retain the properties of matter we can
observe. Atoms are made of three subatomic particles; protons, neutrons, and electrons.



Protons have a relative mass of ___________ amu and a charge of ___________.
Neutrons have a relative mass of ___________ amu and a charge of ___________.
Electrons have a relative mass of nearly___________ amu and a charge of ___________.
In this simulation, you will build atoms, subatomic particle by subatomic particle and observe the
effect of adding more of each particle. When the subatomic particles in an atom change, an ion,
isotope or different element will be created.
Procedure: Play with the Sims  Chemistry  Build An Atom
Begin by playing with the simulation for a while. Become familiar with the
interface. What happens when you add protons, neutrons, or electrons? To

Build some atoms, and write down two examples that have a stable nucleus and neutral charge.
Include a bohr model of your atom.

Part II: Making Ions
Not all atoms are neutral. Many have a charge. These charged atoms are called ions. Some are more positive and
some are more negative. We call the charge on such an atom the “net charge”, or “total charge”.
1.
Make a neutral Beryllium atom. What would you do to make a beryllium atom with a negative charge?
2.
Make the neutral Beryllium atom again. What would you do to make a beryllium atom with a positive charge?
Complete the table below by building some specific elements by filling in the blanks and drawing the bohr model of
that atom.
