Multiple Items Tax and Rounding
You learned how to find the HST on one item. If you buy
more than one item, just add the cost of the items first,
then multiply this by 0.13 to find the tax.
Example:
You order take out from East Side Marios. You get
cheese ravioli for $15.62, 10 wings for $8.23 and a
Caesar salad for $6.10. What is the total you will pay,
including tax?
Answer:
Step 1: Add up the cost of all the items:
$15.62 + $8.23 + $6.10 = $29.95
Step 2: Find the HST by multiplying the cost by 0.13
$29.95 × 0.13 = $3.893
Remember Rounding: We only want to use 2 decimal
places for money.
Count to the right of the decimal 2 spaces (this brings
you to the 9 in our question), now look to the next number
over to the right (the 3).
If this number is below 5 (it is!), the 9 stays a 9.
So our answer is = $3.89
BUT if the number to the right is 5 or above, round up.
So our HST is $3.89
Step 3: Total cost
$29.95 + $3.89 = $33.84
So you will pay $33.84 for your take out meal.
Remember, if you are paying cash, it would be $33.85
(round out the penny).
