List of Children’s books: Sarah Cochran 1.) Who Was Thomas Jefferson? Fradin, D. (2003). Who was Thomas Jefferson? New York, NY: Grosset and Dunlap. - This book is from a “Who Was” series and uses illustrations and dialogue to tell children about famous historical figures. This book would be incredibly useful in my classroom because it would allow students to discover historical figures on their own. 2.) Abraham Lincoln, Friend of the People Judson, C. I. (2007). Abraham Lincoln: Friend of the People. New York, NY: Sterling Publisher. - This is a storybook about Abraham Lincoln for children and takes the reader through the major events of the president’s life. This book would be an excellent asset in my classroom during a unit on the presidents or the Civil War. 3.) Molly Saves the Day Trippe, V. (1986). Molly Saves the Day. Middleton, WI: American Girl Publishing. - This is a story about a young girl named Molly living during World War Two. Her father is in Europe fighting, and the book is one in a series which tells about life on the home front during the war. This would be an excellent way to teach children about WWII. 4.) Schooled Gorman, K. (2007). Schooled. New York, NY: Hyperion Books. - This is a children’s book about a young homeschooled boy who come to “real” school for the first time. This book could be very helpful not only for the many homeschooled children who are new to the public school system, but also for the other children in the class. 6.) How I spent my Summer Vacation Teague, M. (1995). How I Spent My Summer Vacation. New York, NY: Random House. - This is a children’s book about coming back to school after summer vacation. This would be good for the beginning of the year in any classroom. List of Adolescent books: 1.) Poetry for Young People Hughes, L. (2006). Poetry for Young People. New York, NY: Sterling Publishing Co. - This is a book of poetry by Langston Hughes, which is geared towards children. The poems tell the story of African Americans and their struggles during the Harlem Renaissance. This book could be invaluable during units on civil rights or on the 1920’s. 2.) Mythology Evans, L. H. (1825). Mythology. Candlewick Press. -This is a fun activity book on Greek and Roman mythology for children. It gives many useful dates and facts and true stories, but the book presents the information in a fun and engaging way. This would be a useful book in any social studies classroom. 3.)Ronald Reagan Sutcliff, J. (2008). Ronald Reagan. Minneapolis, MN: Lerner Publishing Group. - This is an illustrated biography of Ronald Reagan for young adults. The book contains detailed explanations of his presidency and policies in a way in which students can comprehend. This would be a useful book in any social studies classroom. 4.) Tucket’s Travels Paulson, G. (1994). Tucket's Travels. New York, NY: Yearling Publishers. - This is a book about Manifest Destiny and Westward Expansion in the United States. Tucket is a young boy coming west with his family and the book tells of his experience in a very real and personable way. Students learning about pioneers at any level could benefit from this book. 5.) Under the Blood Red Sun Graham, S. (1994). Under the Blood Red Sun. New York, NY: Random House. - This is a story of a Hawaiian boy in December 1941. The book tells about Pearl Harbor from the perspective of a child. This is a wonderful tool for teaching students about Pearl Harbor in a personal and realistic way.
