List of Children’s books:
Sarah Cochran
1.) Who Was Thomas Jefferson?
Fradin, D. (2003). Who was Thomas Jefferson? New York, NY: Grosset and Dunlap.
- This book is from a “Who Was” series and uses illustrations and dialogue to tell
children about famous historical figures. This book would be incredibly useful in my
classroom because it would allow students to discover historical figures on their
own.
2.) Abraham Lincoln, Friend of the People
Judson, C. I. (2007). Abraham Lincoln: Friend of the People. New York, NY: Sterling
Publisher.
- This is a storybook about Abraham Lincoln for children and takes the reader
through the major events of the president’s life. This book would be an excellent
asset in my classroom during a unit on the presidents or the Civil War.
3.) Molly Saves the Day
Trippe, V. (1986). Molly Saves the Day. Middleton, WI: American Girl Publishing.
- This is a story about a young girl named Molly living during World War Two. Her
father is in Europe fighting, and the book is one in a series which tells about life on
the home front during the war. This would be an excellent way to teach children
about WWII.
4.) Schooled
Gorman, K. (2007). Schooled. New York, NY: Hyperion Books.
- This is a children’s book about a young homeschooled boy who come to “real”
school for the first time. This book could be very helpful not only for the many
homeschooled children who are new to the public school system, but also for the
other children in the class.
6.) How I spent my Summer Vacation
Teague, M. (1995). How I Spent My Summer Vacation. New York, NY: Random
House.
- This is a children’s book about coming back to school after summer vacation. This
would be good for the beginning of the year in any classroom.
List of Adolescent books:
1.) Poetry for Young People
Hughes, L. (2006). Poetry for Young People. New York, NY: Sterling Publishing Co.
- This is a book of poetry by Langston Hughes, which is geared towards children.
The poems tell the story of African Americans and their struggles during the Harlem
Renaissance. This book could be invaluable during units on civil rights or on the
1920’s.
2.) Mythology
Evans, L. H. (1825). Mythology. Candlewick Press.
-This is a fun activity book on Greek and Roman mythology for children. It gives
many useful dates and facts and true stories, but the book presents the information
in a fun and engaging way. This would be a useful book in any social studies
classroom.
3.)Ronald Reagan
Sutcliff, J. (2008). Ronald Reagan. Minneapolis, MN: Lerner Publishing Group.
- This is an illustrated biography of Ronald Reagan for young adults. The book
contains detailed explanations of his presidency and policies in a way in which
students can comprehend. This would be a useful book in any social studies
classroom.
4.) Tucket’s Travels
Paulson, G. (1994). Tucket's Travels. New York, NY: Yearling Publishers.
- This is a book about Manifest Destiny and Westward Expansion in the United
States. Tucket is a young boy coming west with his family and the book tells of his
experience in a very real and personable way. Students learning about pioneers at
any level could benefit from this book.
5.) Under the Blood Red Sun
Graham, S. (1994). Under the Blood Red Sun. New York, NY: Random House.
- This is a story of a Hawaiian boy in December 1941. The book tells about Pearl
Harbor from the perspective of a child. This is a wonderful tool for teaching students
about Pearl Harbor in a personal and realistic way.
