Biodiversity
DO NOW - My definition (or phrases): _____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Definition: THE VARIETY OF LIFE IN THE WORLD OR PARTICULAR ECOSYSTEM
There are three main types of diversity to consider:
1. ECOLOGICAL DIVERSITY – DIFFERENT TYPES OF ECOSYSTEMS IN WORLD
2. SPECIES DIVERSITY – DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPECIES IN AN AREA (CONSIDER AMOUNT AND EVENNESS)
3. GENETIC DIVERISTY – DIFFERENT TYPES OF TRAITS IN A SPECIES
Species Diversity vs. Species Richness
In the picture to the left, both communities have the same SPECIES
RICHNESS. This refers to how in both communities there is four different
species of trees (the amount of species in a given area).
Community 1 has greater species diversity because ALTHOUGH THEY HAVE
THE SAME AMOUNT OF SPECIES, COMMUNITY ONE HAS A MORE EVEN
AMOUNT OF EACH SPECIES.
Species Diversity in the World
Based on the world map above, which area has a greater species diversity and explain why this could be possible.
AREAS IN RED OR DARK ORANGE HAVE A GREATER SPECIES DIVERSITY – THEY HAVE ANYWHERE FROM 41-144 TYPES OF
SPECIES. THEY HAVE MORE SPECIES IN THESE AREAS BECAUSE THE ABIOTIC FACTORS ARE MORE FAVORABLE. THERE IS
MORE SUNLIGHT AND WARMER TEMPERATURES NEAR THE EQUATOR, THERE IS LARGE AMOUNTS OF RAINFALL, AND
FERTILE SOIL IN THESE TROPICAL ZONES.
