Variations in the world's ocean heat storage and its associated volume changes are a key factor to gauge global warming and to
assess the earth's energy and sea level budget. Estimating global ocean heat content (GOHC) and global steric sea level (GSSL)
with temperature/salinity data from the Argo network reveals a positive change of 0.5 +/- 0.1 W m(-2) (applied to the surface area
of the ocean) and 0.5 +/- 0.1 mm year(-1) during the years 2005 to 2012, averaged between 60 degrees S and 60 degrees N and the

This study describes how the hull temperature (Ttop) measurements from multisensor surface velocity program (SVP) drifters can
be combined with other measurements to provide quantitative information on near-surface vertical temperature stratification
during large daily cycles. First, Ttop is compared to the temperature measured at 17 -cm depth from a float tethered to the SVP
drifter. These 2007-12 SVP drifters present a larger daily cycle by 1%-3% for 1 degrees-2 degrees C daily cycle amplitudes, with
a maximum difference close to the local noon. The difference could result from flow around the SVP drifter in the presence of
temperature stratification in the top 20 cm of the water column but also from a small influence of internal drifter temperature on...

Multi-angular images of the brightness temperature (TB) of the Earth at 1.4 GHz are reconstructed from the Soil Moisture and
Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite sensor data since end 2009. Sea surface salinity (SSS) products remote sensing from space is
being attempted using these data over the world oceans. The quality of the first version of the European Space Agency operational
Level 2 (L2) SSS swath products is assessed in this paper, using satellite/in situ SSS data match-ups that were collected over the

Observation of spiciness interannual variability in the Pacific pycnocline

Monthly gridded fields predominantly based on global Argo in situ temperature and salinity data are used to analyze the
density-compensated anomaly of salinity (spiciness anomaly) in the pycnocline of the subtropical and tropical Pacific Ocean
between 2004 and 2011. Interannual variability in the formation, propagation and fate of spiciness anomalies are investigated. The
spiciness anomalies propagate on the isopycnal surface sq = 25.5 along the subtropical-tropical pycnocline advected by the mean
currents. They reach the Pacific Western Tropics in about 5–6 years in the Southern Hemisphere and about 7–8 years in the

Low-frequency thermohaline variability in the Subtropical South Atlantic pycnocline during

Low-frequency variability of spiciness is observed in the Subtropical South Atlantic over the period 2002–2013 with the Argo
gridded product In Situ Analysis System. Within the pycnocline, spiciness anomalies propagate at a mean speed of 0.04 ± 0.02 m
s−1, the same speed as the gyre mean circulation, from the Agulhas Retroflection region off South Africa (~35°S–20°E) toward

Argo-profiling float data, surface fluxes, precipitation, surface velocity data, and wind observations and reanalysis. In this region,
the mixed layer heat budget is characterized by a strong annual cycle mainly modulated by the shortwave radiation annual cycle.

Sea surface freshening inferred from SMOS and ARGO salinity: impact of rain

The sea surface salinity (SSS) measured from space by the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission has recently been
revisited by the European Space Agency first campaign reprocessing. We show that, with respect to the previous version, biases
close to land and ice greatly decrease. The accuracy of SMOS SSS averaged over 10 days, 100 x 100 km(2) in the open ocean and
estimated by comparison to ARGO (Array for Real-Time Geostrophic Oceanography) SSS is on the order of 0.3-0.4 in tropical

French Research vessels have been collecting thermo-salinometer (TSG) data since 1999 to contribute to the Global Ocean
Surface Underway Data (GOSUD) programme. The instruments are regularly calibrated and continuously monitored. Water
samples are taken on a daily basis by the crew and later analysed in the laboratory. We present here the delayed mode processing
of the 2001–2013 dataset and an overview of the resulting quality. Salinity measurement error was a few hundredths of a unit or
less on the practical salinity scale (PSS), due to careful calibration and instrument maintenance, complemented with a rigorous

Salinity measurements from 119 surface drifters in 2007-12 were assessed; 80% [Surface Velocity Program with a barometer with
a salinity sensor (SVP-BS)] and 75% [SVP with salinity (SVP-S)] of the salinity data were found to be usable, after editing out
some spikes. Sudden salinity jumps are found in drifter salinity records that are not always associated with temperature jumps, in
particular in the wet tropics. A method is proposed to decide whether and how to correct those jumps, and the uncertainty in the

ARGO based statistics for climate monitoring

The Argo array, by offering simultaneously global coverage and high vertical resolution, made the monitoring of inter-annual and
decadal variability of the ocean interior possible. In the ARIVO project, we have initiated the production of gridded monthly
fields of temperature and salinity using an optimal analysis tool and designed an iterative approach to combine near-real time and
delayed mode data. The monthly gridded fields are averaged over time to produce the reference state needed by climatological
studies, dynamical modeling and reconstruction methods themselves. Higher degree statistics such as variances and extreme

A mean state of the full-depth summer circulation in the Atlantic Ocean in the region in between Cape Farewell (Greenland),
Scotland and the Greenland-Scotland Ridge (GSR) is assessed by combining 2002–2008 yearly hydrographic measurements at
59.5°N, mean dynamic topography, satellite altimetry data and available estimates of the Atlantic–Nordic Seas exchange. The
mean absolute transports by the upper-ocean, mid-depth and deep currents and the Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOCσ =
16.5 ± 2.2 Sv, at σ0 = 27.55) at 59.5°N are quantified in the density space. Inter-basin and diapycnal volume fluxes in between the

Many oceanographic applications require the positioning of the underwater sensor at measurement times. We consider here the
case of subsurface moored tomographic instruments, where the distance between source and receiver must be known within a few
meters. For that purpose, a long baseline array is deployed: this system includes a navigator, attached to the mooring element and
an array of three transponders set on the ocean bottom. To process the navigation data collected with such system, we have
developed a method based on optimal estimation. The triangulation problem is not a basic spherical constraints one and the

POMME Kalman analysis of physical variables: datasets and gridded fields

The Programme Ocean Multidisciplinaire Meso Echelle (POMME) was designed to describe and quantify the role of mesoscale
processes in the subduction of mode waters in the Northeast Atlantic. Intensive situ measurements were maintained during 1 year
(September 2000 - October 2001), over a 8 degrees square area centered on 18 degrees W, 42 degrees N. In order to synthesized
the in-situ physical observations, and merge them with satellite altimetry and surface fluxes datasets, a simplified Kalman filter
has been designed. Daily fields of temperature, salinity, and stream function were produced on a regular grid over a full seasonal
cycle. We propose here the gridded fields (KA_ files) and the in-situ datasets used by the analysis (Data_ files).

Use of the analysis system for monitoring the ARGO sensors drifts

In the previous letter, we briefly presented the analysis system operational at the Coriolis datacen-ter. This system both synthetises
data sets by pro-ducing temperature and salinity gridded fields and checks for quality the data from the Coriolis data-base in real

Errors in SMOS Sea Surface Salinity and their dependency on a priori wind speed

The wind speed (WS) provided by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is used to initialize the
retrieval process of WS and Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) obtained by the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission. This
process compensates for the lack of onboard instrument providing a measure of ocean surface WS independent of the L-band

A four-dimensional analysis of the thermal structure in the Gulf of Lion

Uncertainty in ocean analysis methods and deficiencies in the observing system are major obstacles for the reliable reconstruction
of the past ocean climate. The variety of existing ocean reanalyses is exploited in a multi-reanalysis ensemble to improve the
ocean state estimation and to gauge uncertainty levels. The ensemble-based analysis of signal-to-noise ratio allows the
identification of ocean characteristics for which the estimation is robust (such as tropical mixed-layer-depth, upper ocean heat
content), and where large uncertainty exists (deep ocean, Southern Ocean, sea ice thickness, salinity), providing guidance for
future enhancement of the observing and data assimilation systems.

The Bay of Biscay climatology is the synthesis of all the in situ data collected in the bay of Biscay area as far as 15°W, in the 20th
century and mainly by IFREMER, SHOM, and WDCA. It shows temperature and salinity monthly information through the whole
water column with a 1/10 degree resolution. The resulting atlas was produced by an optimal analysis which can reflect different

French Research vessels have been collecting thermo-salinometer (TSG) data since the early 2000 in contribution to the GOSUD
programme. The set of homogeneous instruments is permanently monitored and regularly calibrated. Water samples are taken on
a daily basis by the crew and later analysed in the laboratory. We present here the delayed mode processing of the 2001-2013
dataset and an overview of the resulting quality. The careful calibration and instrument maintenance, complemented with a
rigorous adjustment on water samples lead to reach an accuracy of a few 10-² PSS in salinity or evenless. Global comparison with

Mixed-layer salinity budget in the tropical Indian Ocean: seasonal cycle based only on observations

Measurements of salinity by volontary observing ships are complementary of the measurements performed by the research vessels
and represent a significant contribution to the global ocean observing networks. The Laboratoire de Physique des Océans (LPO)
has tested four NKE-STPS sensors developped for the RECOPESCA project in collaboration with sailor Philippe Poupon. The
sensors have been operating for 3 navigation seasons on board saling ship Fleur Australe. This reports synthesizes the
informations related to the preparation, installation and checking of the sensors.
