Verónica Razo
Dear Attorney General,
I am very concerned about the case of Verónica Razo, a torture survivor who has been in
prison for almost six years without being convicted of any crime.
On 8 June 2011, Verónica left her house to pick up her children from school when a vehicle
with a group of armed men dressed in civilian clothing took her to a Federal Police warehouse
where they are said to have raped her and subjected her to near asphyxiation and electric
shocks. She was held for 24 hours and apparently forced to sign a confession admitting to
abduction and other crimes which she did not commit.
Medical examinations from the time of her arrest show multiple injuries all over her body. Two
years after her arrest, in June 2013, a forensic psychologist from your office confirmed that
Verónica presented symptoms consistent with torture.
Amnesty International has reviewed the case and finds no evidence that Verónica committed
any of the crimes she has been accused of, except for the testimonies that were obtained
through torture and other grave violations of due process.
Therefore, I respectfully urge you to drop all charges against Verónica Razo, allowing for her
immediate release.
Please also ensure that concrete advances are made in the investigation into the police
officers responsible for her detention and torture, including those with command responsibility.
Yours sincerely,
