Cell City/ Cell Football Stadium Analogy
Floating around in the cytoplasm are small structures called organelles. Like the organs
in your own body, each one carries out a specific function necessary for the cell to
survive. Imagine the cell as a miniature city or football stadium. The organelles might
represent people, places or parts of the city/stadium because they each have similar
jobs. Below are the descriptions of important parts of the Cell City and Cell Football
Stadium. Choose ONLY ONE of the analogies to work with:

Toll Booths on either side of city - control what goes in and out of the city
Fence around the City – provides extra support to the city
City Hall – Where the mayor is located.
Mayor – Controls all the activities of the city.
Construction Company - Make structures for the city.
Delivery Van on Roads - transports products made at the construction company to
other locations.
G. Warehouse - Stores materials needed by the city.
H. Solar Power Plant – Uses the sun’s energy and stores it.
I. Power Company - Takes energy from the solar power plant to make usable energy
for the city.
OR
Stadium Security – controls who and what goes in and out of the stadium
Stadium Walls - provide extra support to the stadium
Head Coach - controls all the activities of the team (calls plays)
Playbook – With the coach and stores all of the different plays and team information
Football players - the people who make the plays
Football Field - the place where the ball is transported to the desired location (end
zone)
G. Gatorade cooler - stores water and fluids for the team.
H. Concession Stand Workers - use raw ingredients to produce food that can then be
used by others for energy.
I. Fans - eat and breakdown food into usable energy and use that energy to cheer for
their favorite team and players.

Part 1 – Fill in the last column of the table with the parts of the city listed above. Once
you have completed your table, show this to your teacher and begin Part 2.
Organelle
Function
Part from Analogy
Nucleus
Large, round/oval structure usually located near
the center of the cell. It is the control center and
stores the DNA.
DNA
Genetic information for the cell found inside the
nucleus.
Cell membrane
Surrounds entire cell and controls what gets in
and out.
Cell wall
In plant cells, surrounds the cell membrane. For
extra support.
Endoplasmic
reticulum (ER)
Proteins travel on this. They are like
passageways.
Ribosomes
Small dots in a cell. Make proteins.
Chloroplast
Green structure that takes in sun’s energy and
turns it into food energy.
Mitochondria
Takes food energy and turns it into usable energy
(ATP)
Large central
vacuole
Very large organelle in plant cells. Stores water,
food, wastes, or other materials.
Part I: Plant Cell Drawing
On a plain piece of paper, you will sketch, color, and label a plant cell. Include all the cell parts
listed in the chart above. Use your notes to help you
Part II: City/Stadium Drawing
On a plain piece of paper, you will sketch, color, and label the city OR football stadium with the
organelle and city/football stadium part (nucleus/city hall OR nucleus/head coach). Make sure
you place the part in the correct location Ex: The cell membrane is one of the outermost parts
of a cell, so the police department/city limits OR stadium walls; should not be in the center of
your drawing. DNA should be inside the nucleus.
Part III: Mobile Construction – see grade sheet for details.
