Magma cools below Earth’s surface. Large crystals visible.
What is extrusive?
Lava cools on Earth’s surface. No visible mineral crystals.

being deposited,
compacted, and
cemented together?
Sedimentary Rock
What is clastic?
AKA Detrital – Minerals and other small rocks that have
been moved and deposited in layers
What is organic?
Once was living matter, now pressed into rock
What is chemical?
Dissolved minerals are deposited
Which kind is formed
by heat and pressure
deep within Earth?
Metamorphic Rocks
What is foliated?
Visible layers - heated and squeezed into parallel layers
What is nonfoliated?
Does not have layers or bands
