NOT HAD YOUR FLU VACCINATION?
Issue 21 – Winter 2016
ANTIBIOTIC AWARENESS
Protect yourself, your family and friends
against the spread of antibiotic resistance.
What is antibiotic resistance?
The Problem
Antibiotics treat infections by killing bacteria
but now bacteria are fighting back. Our
medicines are becoming less effective which
means more complications for people receiving
treatment in hospital. We have to tackle this
problem before it gets worse.
How this Happened
There are many reasons why antibiotics lose
their effectiveness, but her are two key ones:
Firstly, we take medicines that we don’t need.
Antibiotics don’t help most colds or coughs get
better but we still request antibiotics for them.
If you have not yet had your flu vaccination and are
eligible, please speak to Reception to arrange a
convenient appointment.

If you are unwell while the surgery is closed, always ring 111,
this is the NHS number for urgent calls.
In the event of an emergency dial 999.
We would advise patents to ensure that they have enough
medication to last over the festive period so please order your
repeat prescriptions in plenty of time.
Secondly, we make things worse when we don’t
take antibiotics exactly as prescribed, for
instance, missing doses. Never save antibiotics
for future use or give them to someone else.
What Can I Do?
Antibiotics are some of our most precious
medicines, used to treat both humans and
animals. Appropriate use of antibiotics will
slow down the development of antibiotic
resistant bacteria.
Don’t ask for antibiotics, treat your cold and flu
symptoms with pharmacist advice and over the
counter medicines.

APPOINTMENT DNA’s
Many patients fail to keep their appointments.
This is a waste of staff time and resources and
most of all it impacts on the length of time
others have to wait for their appointments.
During the month of November we have
had 118 DNA’d appointments.
If you are unable to keep your appointment or
no longer require it, please let us know so it
can be offered to someone else.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) are the independent regulator of health and social care
in England. The CQC inspects GP practices in the following 5 areas:
*SAFE
*EFFECTIVE
*CARING
*RESPONSIVE
*WELL LED
Hingham Surgery has recently undergone a CQC inspection and are pleased to report that we
received an overall rating of GOOD.
The Care Quality Commission’s full report will be published on 6th December and available to
view via a link on the surgery website and a printed copy will be held at Reception.
Alternatives to drinking – ways to relax without alcohol
Cutting back on alcohol is part of making changes to improve your health, and there can be other
benefits too. If you tend to drink in the same place, or at the same time, or with the same people,
try to change your routine so that you do something different instead. If you drink every day, aim to
have at least two days a week when you don’t drink, and find other ways to spend your time.
Why not try…

catching up with an old friend on the phone, or writing to them
doing some home-working, like making products or stuffing envelopes
going for a walk, a swim or a bike ride – you’ll feel great!
doing some odd jobs you’ve been putting off for ages
walking the dog
rediscovering your music collection
starting a new hobby – the options are endless!
learning to cook or draw
doing some voluntary work
joining a club, gym or five-a-side team – find places to get active near you
And there are loads more ideas out there!
It'll be worth it!
There are great benefits when you cut down on booze, like better health, better skin, or more cash
