CUSTOM CONTROLS – LOW VOLTAGE
PART 1
1.01
GENERAL
SCOPE
A. The manufacturer of the (cooling tower)(closed circuit cooling tower)(evaporative
condenser) shall furnish the low voltage enclosed controls as specified herein and
as shown on the contract drawings.

A. The motor starters shall be designed, manufactured and tested in accordance with
the latest applicable standards of NEMA or IEC, ANSI and UL.
1.04
SUBMITTALS – FOR REVIEW/APPROVAL
A. The following information shall be submitted to the Engineer:
1. Master drawing index
2. Dimensioned outline drawings
3. Conduit entry/exit locations
4. Cable terminal sizes
5. Wiring diagrams
6. Nameplate schedule
7. Ratings including:
a. Voltage
b. Horsepower and/or continuous current
8. Product data sheets

QUALIFICATIONS
A. For the equipment specified herein, the manufacturer shall be ISO 9001 or 9002
certified.
B. The manufacturer of this equipment shall have produced similar electrical equipment
for a minimum period of ten (10) years. When requested by the Engineer, an
acceptable list of installations with similar equipment shall be provided
demonstrating compliance with this requirement.

DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
A. Equipment shall be handled and stored in accordance with manufacturer’s
instructions.

2.01
PRODUCTS
MANUAL MOTOR CONTROL - THREE-PHASE MANUAL MOTOR STARTER AND
PROTECTOR
1. The starter shall have an adjustable Class 10 ambient compensated integral
overload relay and a fixed magnetic short-circuit trip mechanism designed to trip
at twelve (12) times the maximum current rating of the starter.
2. The starter shall be UL listed and CSA certified for group motor installations with
1200 ampere maximum circuit breaker ratings at 480V AC.
3. The starter shall have provisions for padlocking in the OFF position.
4. The starter shall have accessories such as auxiliary contacts, trip alarm,
undervoltage release, and shunt trip available for field installation.
2.02
ELECTROMECHANICAL MOTOR CONTROL
A. Non-Reversing Starters
1. Magnetic starters shall be equipped with double-break silver alloy contacts. The
starter must have straight-through wiring. Each starter shall have one (1) NO
auxiliary contact.
2. Coils shall be of molded construction. All coils to be color-coded through Size 5
and permanently marked with voltage, frequency and part number.
3. Overload relays shall be an ambient compensated bimetallic-type with
interchangeable heaters, calibrated for 1.0 and 1.15 service factor motors.
Overload heaters shall be supplied by the manufacturer and sized appropriately
to the specs of the motor. Electrically isolated NO and NC contacts shall be
provided on the relay. Visual trip indication shall be standard. A test trip feature
shall be provided for ease of troubleshooting and shall be conveniently operable
without removing components or the motor starter. Overload to have (+/-) 24%
adjustability, single-phase sensitivity, and isolated alarm contact and manual or
automatic reset.
4. NEMA Size 00 through 2 starters shall be suitable for the addition of at least six
(6) external auxiliary contacts of any arrangement normally open or normally
closed. Size 3 through 8 starters shall be suitable for the addition of up to eight
(8) external auxiliary contacts of any arrangement normally open or normally
closed.
B. Two-Speed Starters
1. Magnetic starters shall be equipped with double-break silver alloy contacts. The
starter must have straight-through wiring.
2. Coils shall be of molded construction. All coils to be color-coded through Size 5
and permanently marked with voltage, frequency and part number.

3. Overload relays shall be an ambient compensated bimetallic-type with
interchangeable heaters, calibrated for 1.0 and 1.15 service factor motors.
Overload heaters shall be supplied by the manufacturer and sized appropriately
to the specs of the motor. Electrically isolated NO and NC contacts shall be

normally closed contacts. The enclosure shall be 1[NEMA (1)(3R)(12)(4)(4X)] as
indicated on the contract drawings.
2.03
BASIN HEATERS CONTROLS
A. Basin Heater controls shall be equipped with a Definite Purpose contactor that is
rated for HVAC equipment.
B. Basin Heater controls shall be equipped with a re-settable short circuit protective
device.
C. Basin Heater controls shall be equipped with a Ground Fault Protection Relay to
provide ground fault protection.
2.04
CONTROL RELAYS
A. Electro-Mechanical Control Relays – Electro-Mechanical
1. Contacts shall be rated NEMA A600 with a continuous thermal rating of 10
amperes AC and NEMA P300 with a continuous thermal rating of 5 amperes DC.
2. Relays shall be available with interchangeable AC or DC magnetic coils. The
standard coils shall be rated 120V AC/60 Hz. 2[Optional AC coil ratings shall be
230/60 or 460/60 575/60, 208/60]
3. The Control Relays shall be 4-pole as standard and available in any
configuration of NO or NC contacts. Expansion of the number of available
contacts shall be possible through the addition of top mount front deck adders.
These adders shall be available in 2-pole or 4-pole units. The 2-pole top deck
adder can come with any configuration of NO or NC contacts and the 4-pole
adder shall be available with up to four (4) NO or two (2) NC contacts.
4. The control relay shall also be capable of conversion to a solid-state or
pneumatic timer by addition of a field installable timer attachment.

A. Pushbuttons and Pilot Devices shall be 30.5 mm, heavy duty, multifunction
pushbuttons, or approved equal.
B. Device bodies shall be zinc die cast with chrome plating or cathodic epoxy coating.
C. Devices shall utilize a single panel gasket and provide integral grounding by means
of either a built-in grounding terminal or a pointed grounding surface integral to the
device.
D. Devices shall be UL or CSA listed or CE marked for types 1, 3R, 4, 4X, and 12 when
mounted in a suitable enclosure with the same ratings.
E. Devices shall have an operating temperature range of -17 degrees C to 66 degrees
C.
F. Pushbuttons and contact blocks shall have a published mechanical life of not less
than 10,000,000 operations.

SELECTOR SWITCHES
A. Selector Switches shall be 30.5 mm, heavy duty, multi-function or approved equal.
B. Device bodies shall be zinc die cast with chrome plating or cathodic epoxy coating.
C. Devices shall utilize a single panel gasket and provide integral grounding by means
of either a built-in grounding terminal or a pointed grounding surface integral to the
device.
D. Devices shall be UL or CSA listed or CE marked for NEMA types (1)(3R)(4)(4X)(12)
when mounted in a suitable enclosure with the same ratings.
E. Devices shall have an operating temperature range of –17°C to +66°C.
2.07
INDICATING LIGHTS
A. Indicating lights shall be 30.5 mm, heavy duty, multi-function or approved equal.
B. Device bodies shall be zinc die cast with chrome plating or cathodic epoxy coating.
C. Devices shall utilize a single panel gasket and provide integral grounding by means
of either a built-in grounding terminal or a pointed grounding surface integral to the
device.
D. Devices shall be UL or CSA listed or CE marked for NEMA types (1)(3R)(4)(4X)(12)
when mounted in a suitable enclosure with the same ratings.
E. Devices shall have an operating temperature range of –17°C to 66°C.
F. Indicating lights shall be incandescent. Lens color shall be as indicated on the
contract drawings.

(TEMPERATURE)(PRESSURE) CONTROLLER
A. A (temperature)(pressure) controller shall be preprogrammed by the manufacturer of
the (cooling tower)(closed circuit cooling tower)(evaporative condenser) to most
efficiently run the application.

B. The controller shall be installed and shipped from the manufacturer.
C. Program functions shall include contacts, coils, timers, counters, ModBus
communications, PID, PWM outputs, interrupts, shift registers, conversion, bit, word,
double word operations.
D. The controller shall be capable of operating in ambient temperatures of 0 to 55
degrees C (32 to 131 degrees F).
PART 3
3.01
EXECUTION
FACTORY TESTING
A. Standard factory tests shall be performed on the equipment provided under this
section. All tests shall be in accordance with the latest version of UL and NEMA
standards.
B. Upon request, the manufacturer shall provide a certified copy of factory test reports.
3.02
MAINTENANCE / WARRANTY SERVICE
A. Warranty is twelve (12) months from date of shipment or eighteen (18) months from
date of startup, whichever occurs first, and includes parts only.
