Lesson 2: In class handout (group)
Unit: Great Depression
Part A. Map
1. Identify on the attached map the areas of the US that were affected by the Dust Bowl. Include
areas of relocation.
Part B. Evaluate and discuss the following situations within your group. Then answer the questions from
an individual perspective.
2. Evaluate the causes of the Dust Bowl.
3. What prevention techniques could have been used?
4. Weigh the options of the Southern farmer. What would you have done?
5. Formulate at least one government policy that would help those affected by the Dust Bowl.
Explain its purpose, who it would benefit, and how.
Part C. Group Presentation
In your group of 3-4 members, develop a brief and informative presentation about the Dust
Bowl. The presentation should include an explanation of ideas and resolutions of the Dust Bowl and its
victims, and ideas to prevent another Dust Bowl from occurring. Students should consider current
problems, such as deforestation and soil erosion when formulating prevention techniques.
Presentations should be at least 5 minutes in length. Presentations should be thoughtful and creative,
while displaying accurate information. Props, such as posters, skits, handouts, maps, etc. are
encouraged.
