What is a ‘General Election’? Main Idea- general election is an election where voters make the final decision about a candidate- whoever wins will get the job Details-before the general election there is a primary election that nominates candidates for the general elections Ballot measures- help decide which laws pass-ex. Referendum, constitutional amendment or proposals (Should we have a full day Kindergarten?) What are the ‘Basics of Voting’? Main Idea- In order to vote you must : be 18 years old and a citizen of the US be a resident of the state you are voting in you must register (sign up ) to vote – prevent voter fraud go to assigned polling place- check in (sign and show ID) and vote Details- ways to vote: pull a lever, punch a card or make an X When: federal election 1st Tuesday after the first Monday in November, local ones can be anytime set by state or town How do you become an ‘Informed Voter’? Main Idea- Informed voters think about what is important to them then find out about the candidates qualifications and stand on issues. They also read what questions will be on the ballot beforehand and get information on both sides of the issue, Details- only ½ citizens’ vote-Americans have a civic duty to vote. Sec 2How does the candidate get his messages out? Main Idea- Candidates get their message on issues to you through posters, brochures, personal appearances, direct mail, the internet and advertisements on TV and radio Details- TV and radio ads are expensive- TV-focus on image not issues How do different types of interest groups get their message out? Main Idea- Interest groups help candidates by giving them money and endorsing them to their members Details- PACS- large political Interest groups - give large sums of money to campaigns 527- tax free interest group- works on issues not support a candidate directly, fewer limits, How do you recognize propaganda? Main Idea- Propaganda is a message that is meant to influence people’s opinion and ideas, it tells only one side of the story, distorts the truth, and/or it appeals to people’s emotion Details- It includes card stacking, bandwagon, plain folks name calling, glittering generalities… How does the news media report elections? Main Idea- the media reports the elections by editorials, news reports, opinion polls, TV and radio advertisements and the internet. Details- some news can be bias towards one candidate – longer reports, good/bad pictures… Explain the process of planning, running and financing a campaign. Main Idea- A campaign requires organization, staff and money. Details- successful campaigns know how the majority of the people feel about the issues. The campaign secretary monitors the media. Press secretary makes sure candidate has news coverage. Campaign manager-Good public image. How are elections won? (Electoral College) Main Idea- In a presidential election, the Electoral College decides who wins based on the majority of votes from their state. Campaign Law- rules of giving money to campaigns FEC- Federal Election Commission- carry out laws about campaign finance that Congress passes Details- people can give up to 2000.00 to a candidate but report anyone giving more than 200.00 PAC’s can give 5000.00 to a candidate in primaries Candidates must choose PAC or public monies incumbents- the person already in office trying to win again has the best chance to win- popularity
