The Reproduction Function
Big Question: How does DNA control the individual and the population
in which it lives?
I.
Types of Reproduction
a. Sexual – requires 2 partners.
i. Individuals share DNA, and offspring is a often a
blend of the DNA
b. Asexual – requires only one individual
i. An individual divides, creating an exact copy of
itself.
II.
Asexual Reproduction
a. Fission – splitting apart
i. Binary Fission – a parent organism splits into two
daughter organisms.
ii. Multiple Fission – The nucleus of an individual splits
several times, creating multiple nuclei. The
cytoplasm splits to create several daughter
organisms.
b. Budding – Buds grown into fully matured organisms and
then break off of the mother cell.
c. Vegetative Propagation – cutting off a piece of a plant and
creating conditions where the piece grows roots.
Directions: Indicate which of the following types of asexual
reproduction is taking place.
