Genetics Vocabulary
1. Allele - Alternate forms of a gene or DNA sequence
2. Chromosome - A single DNA molecule, a tightly coiled strand of DNA
3. Chromosome Theory of Heredity - states that genes are located on chromosomes
and that each gene occupies a specific place on a chromosome
4. Codominance - An inheritance relationship in which neither of two alleles of the
same gene totally mask the other
5. Dominant - A characteristic in which an allele expresses its phenotype even in the
presence of a recessive allele
6. Genotype - The structure of DNA that determines the expression of a trait
7. Incomplete Dominance - A condition where a heterozygous offspring has a
phenotype that is distinctly different from and intermediate to, the parental
phenotypes
8. Multiple Alleles - Three or more alleles of the same gene that code for a single
trait
9. Law of Independent Assortment - The law stating that pairs of genes separate
independently of one another in meiosis
10. Genome - The complete genetic material contained in an individual
11. Phenotype - The observable characteristic of an organism, the expression of gene
allele as an observable physical or biochemical trait
12. Punnett Square - A type of grid used o show the gametes of each parent and their
possible offspring; a type of grid that can indicate all the possible outcomes of a
genetic cross
13. Recessive - Characterized as having a phenotype expressed only when both
copies of the gene are mutated or missing
14. Sex Influenced - Description of a trait that is caused by a gene whose expression
differs in males and females
15. Sex Linkage - The presence of a gene on a sex chromosome
16. Geno- - Origin/birth/gene
17. Pheno- - Show/display
18. Gene - a locus on a chromosome that encodes a specific protein or several
related proteins
19. Law of Segregation - The law stating that pairs of genes separate in meiosis and
each gamete receives on gene of a pair
