Atom
The smallest unit of all matter;
Comes from the Greek word
atoma meaning “uncuttable”
Nucleus
The center of an atom;
Contains neutrons and protons
Proton
A positively charged particle
contained in the nucleus
Neutron
A neutrally charged particle
contained in the nucleus
Electron
Negatively charged particles
which travel on shells around the
outside of the nucleus
Shells
Energy levels or orbitals;
Invisible path around the nucleus
on which electrons travel
