Lesson 1-4 Vocabulary
Atom – An atom is the smallest unit of an element that still has all of the properties
(physical and chemical) of that element.
Element – An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance
by physical or chemical means.
Examples of Elements are hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), carbon (C), gold (Au),
calcium (Ca).
Compound – A compound is a combination two or more elements that are chemically
combined.
Examples of Compounds are table salt (Sodium chloride: NaCl), water (H2O),
vinegar (Acetic acid: CH3COOH), table sugar (Sucrose: C12H24O11)
Molecule – A molecule is a combination of two or more atoms that are chemically
combined.
Examples of molecules are Hydrogen gas(H2), Oxygen gas (O2), ozone (O3)
Mixture – A mixture is a combination of substances that are not chemical combined.
Pure Substance – A pure substance is a substance that is made up of one type of particle.
Heterogeneous Mixture – A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture that does not have a
uniform composition.
Example of heterogeneous mixtures are: peanut butter and jelly,
Homogeneous Mixture - A homogeneous mixture is a mixture that does have a uniform
composition.
Solution - A solution is a homogeneous mixture in which one substance is dissolved in
another substance.
Examples of solutions are: tea, koo-aid, hot cocoa
Suspension - A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture that has particles that are spread
out throughout the mixture.
Example of suspensions are: vinagrette,
Colloid – A colloid has particles that are unevenly spread throughout the mixture.
Examples of colloids are: jello, yogurt, butter
