Sinfonia Viva Makes Children’s Festival Debut
Sinfonia Viva – the national orchestra based in the East Midlands - makes its debut next
month at the Spark Festival – the largest children’s arts festival in England and Wales.
Viva will be welcoming young families to a workshop and performance entitled ‘Where
Corals Lie’ at Leicester’s Embrace Arts on Sunday June 1.
The workshop between 1pm and 1.45pm will give families the unique opportunity to meet
Viva composer Jack Ross, storyteller Zoe Palmer and musicians to learn some of the songs
and try out instruments that create the sounds of the sea and all that lurks beneath.
This will be followed by an hour-long concert at 2pm with ‘Captain Jack’ and his merry crew
taking the family audience on a watery adventure of stories and music.
The concert will weave around a specially-written story about life on the ocean waves and
will include a diverse musical programme from Lennon-McCartney's Yellow Submarine to
Elgar's beautiful Where Corals Lie.
Jack Ross, whose work with Viva has been shortlisted for the national British Composer
Awards in recent years, explained: “The programme that we have put together is perfect for
children aged five and above and their families.
“As well as sitting back and enjoying the music, we will be getting the audience involved in
many of the pieces with opportunities to join in with percussion, voices and even
movement.
“We will also be introducing the young audience to some instruments that they may not be
so familiar with, such as the Vibraphone which is a percussion instrument that sounds like a
piano made out of bells.
“Viva has a national reputation for education and community work and we know just how
receptive children are to all different kinds of music.
“We therefore hope that this special relaxed and interactive style of concert with stories
which will ignite their love of music from both classical and contemporary composers and
encourage them to play and enjoy music throughout their lives.”
Tickets for the workshop cost £3 each and are £7 for the concert or £25 for a party of four.
