Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
How I wonder what you are
Up above the world so high
Like a diamond in the sky
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
How I wonder what you are
Names in your group:
The song, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, was written probably around 1774. At the same time, astronomers were
learning about the life cycle of stars. If you notice, the song even states that the composer doesn’t know
anything about stars: “How I wonder what you are.”
Directions: Now that you know about stars, your lab is to rewrite the song with accurate information. You will
work in groups of three. Your song must be at least three stanzas long, each written by a different member of
your group. Here is what must go in each stanza:
Stanza One: Layers of the sun
Stanza Two: Life cycle of a star
Stanza Three: Light Years and AUs
You will turn one sheet in for your entire group.
FYI: Stars twinkle because of turbulence in Earth’s atmosphere. As the atmosphere moves, the light from the
star is refracted in different directions. This causes the star's image to change slightly in brightness and position,
hence "twinkle." This is one of the reasons the Hubble telescope is so successful: in space; there is no
atmosphere to make the stars twinkle, which allows a much better image for Hubble.
