An exceptionally simple desorption/ionization source for ambient mass
spectrometry is described. Based on Venturi easy ambient sonic-spray ionization1 (VEASI), the source was further simplified by the use of a can of compressed air2 which
simultaneously provides solution or solvent Venturi self-pumping and continuous,
stable and abundant low-noise ion signal via voltage-free sonic-spray ionization for
both liquid and solid samples. Further simplification in source design was also attained
by the use of inexpensive and readily commercially available parts: a syrurgical 2-way
catheter, an aerosol can of compressed air, a 30 cm long fused-silica capillary and a
hypodermic needle. Therefore, this spartanic V-EASI source eliminates all together the
need of droplet’s electrical charging, electrical pumping and gas cylinders and their
regulators which are normally required for spray-based ionization techniques. This
easy-to-assemble fully portable source, which is only assisted by a can of compressed
air and incorporates Venturi self-pumping and sonic spraying seems ideal for in-situ
ambient mass spectrometry using miniature mass spectrometers.
