Key Concepts
*Independent Events the occurrence of one event has no effect on the occurrence of another event.
*Dependent Events the occurrence of one event affects the occurrence of the other.
*Conditional Probabilitythe probability that one event will occur given that another event already has occurred.
P(A and B) = P(A) P(B A)
Guided Practice
Ex 1: a. Consider flipping a coin 2 times and recording the results. What is the probability it lands on "tails" both times?
b. Consider flipping it 3 times. What is the probability it lands on "tails" all 3 times?
Guided Practice
Ex 2: Consider rolling two 6sided dice twice.
a) What is the probability that the first roll is doubles and the second roll is a 10?
b) What is the probability that the first roll is an 8 and the second roll is doubles?
c) What is the probability that the first roll is an even sum and the second roll is greater than 8?
Guided Practice Ex 3: What is the probability the first roll is an even sum and the second roll is greater than 6?
Guided Practice
Ex 4: A gumball machine contains 100 gumballs (20 red, 20 blue, 20 green, 20 yellow and 20 white). Find the probability of each event.
a) P(blue, then white)
b) P(green, then red, then blue)
c) P(blue, then blue, then blue)
d) P(yellow, then yellow)
