Our Identity in Christ
Intro
1. Our identity determines our conduct.
2. Rom. 12:1-2 – requires us to renew our minds as to who we are.
3. If we don’t renew our minds, we will find ourselves content with normalcy and
not hungry, thirsty, and passionate about Jesus Christ.
Identity has to do with who we belong to or connect with – We
belong to Jesus!
Believers belong to Christ
Rom. 8:9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of
God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not
belong to Him.
1Cor. 3:23 and you belong to Christ; and Christ belongs to God.
Gal. 3:29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants,
heirs according to promise.
Gal. 5:24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its
passions and desires.
1Cor. 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is
in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
Believers are connected with Christ.
Rom. 6:5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death,
certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection,
Rom. 7:4 Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through
the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was
raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.
1Cor. 1:30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us
wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,
2Cor. 13:5 Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or
do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless
indeed you fail the test?
Identity has to do with power – The Holy Spirit dwelling within is
our power from God.
The Holy Spirit is the power of God.
Luke 1:35 The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon
you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason
the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.
Luke 4:14 And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news
about Him spread through all the surrounding district.
The power of the Holy Spirit has been given and is available to every
believer. It is their birthright.
1
John 7:38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost
being will flow rivers of living water.’”
John 7:39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were
to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Luke 24:49 “And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you;
but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Acts 1:8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;
and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,
and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
Rom. 15:19 in the power of signs and wonders, in the power of the Spirit; so
that from Jerusalem and round about as far as Illyricum I have fully preached the
gospel of Christ.
Rom. 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing,
so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
1Cor. 4:20 For the kingdom of God does not consist in words but in power.
2Cor. 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing
greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves;
Eph. 1:19 [may the eyes of your hearts be enlightened to see] what is the
surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in
accordance with the working of the strength of His might
Eph. 3:16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be
strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man,
Phil. 3:10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the
fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;
Col. 1:11 [I pray that you be] strengthened with all power, according to His
glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously
2Tim. 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and
discipline.
1Pet. 1:5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation
ready to be revealed in the last time.
2Pet. 1:3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to
life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own
glory and excellence.
Eph. 3:20 Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we
ask or think, according to the power that works within us,
Identity has to do with who shapes our lives – If we belong to Christ,
His power is at work in us.
His power has set us free from sin’s power to live a new life.
Rom. 6:4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death,
so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we
too might walk in newness of life.
Rom. 6:5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death,
certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection,
Rom. 6:6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our
body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;
2
Rom. 6:7 for he who has died is freed from sin.
Rom. 6:8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with
Him,
Rom. 6:9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die
again; death no longer is master over Him.
Rom. 6:10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that
He lives, He lives to God.
Rom. 6:11 Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ
Jesus.
Rom. 6:12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its
lusts,
Rom. 6:13 and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as
instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive
from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
Rom. 6:14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but
under grace.
His power works in us to fulfill His law and will.
Rom. 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the
law of sin and of death.
Rom. 8:3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God
did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin,
He condemned sin in the flesh,
Rom. 8:4 so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not
walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
His power at work in us testifies to our belonging to Him.
Rom. 8:16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God,
Rom. 8:17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if
indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
2Cor. 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the
Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from
the Lord, the Spirit.
We can and should see our lives being shaped by the Spirit of Christ.
2Cor. 13:5 Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or
do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless
indeed you fail the test?
The father directs the identity course of his son by what He does –
We are sons of God and we are His workmanship.
Our identity is established by God, our father.
Gal. 4:6 Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into
our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
1Cor. 1:30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us
wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,
1John 3:1 See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we
would be called children of God; and such we are.
3
God adopted us through Jesus Christ.
Eph. 1:2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Eph. 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed
us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
Eph. 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we
would be holy and blameless before Him. In love
Eph. 1:5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself,
according to the kind intention of His will,
Eph. 1:6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in
the Beloved.
Eph. 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our
trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
Eph. 1:8 which He lavished on us.
We are God’s workmanship.
Eph. 2:4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He
loved us,
Eph. 2:5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together
with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
Eph. 2:6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly
places in Christ Jesus,
Eph. 2:7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His
grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
Eph. 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of
yourselves, it is the gift of God;
Eph. 2:9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Eph. 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,
which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
What are we to do with this truth about our identity?
The old man has died.
1. The old man belonged to this world.
2. The old man was attracted to what the world calls power.
3. The old man was shaped by the forces at work in the world.
4. The old man’s identity was established by his father, the devil.
Rom. 6:6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our
body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;
2Cor. 5:14 For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died
for all, therefore all died;
Col. 3:3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
2Tim. 2:11 It is a trustworthy statement:
For if we died with Him, we will also live with Him;
Cast off the dead man!
Eph. 4:22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old
self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit,
4
Col. 3:9 Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil
practices,
1Cor. 15:31 I affirm, brethren, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus
our Lord, I die daily.
Put on the new man!
Eph. 4:23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
Eph. 4:24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created
in righteousness and holiness of the truth.
Col. 3:10 and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge
according to the image of the One who created him—
Walk in the fullness of the Spirit of God.
Eph. 1:23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
Eph. 3:19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you
may be filled up to all the fullness of God.
Eph. 4:13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the
Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the
fullness of Christ.
Eph. 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled
with the Spirit,
I belong to Jesus. His Spirit lives within me and is my source of power today. His
Spirit will change me today as He fills and lives in me. I am blessed to be God’s
son/daughter. Today I will reckon my old self as having died and will be alive to
what the life of God in me loves and hates. Father, please give me the fullness of
the Holy Spirit as you promised through Jesus Christ for your glory.
