Civilization
Civilization comes from the Latin word civis which means
“inhabitants of a city”.
An advanced stage of social and political organization
characterized by a sedentary (settled) lifestyle, a strong agricultural
community, complex religious organization, a system of education,
the study of science and medicine, the development of technology,
and the growth of trade and commerce, as well as, the arts.
The main factor which influences the growth of civilization is
agriculture, since a settled way of life is possible only if there is a
steady supply of food available.
The first civilizations developed in areas where there was abundant
water and rich soil. Ex) river valley.
The earliest civilizations developed in an area called Mesopotamia.
Mesopotamia is Greek for “land between the rivers”. These rivers
were the Tigris and the Euphrates.
