SUSSEX WILDLIFE TRUST COURSE INFORMATION SHEET FOR WEBSITE Course Title: An Introduction to the Plants and Animals found along our Sussex Coastline Start Time: 10:00 Day/Date/Year: Saturday 5 July 2014 Finish Time: 12:00 Course Tutor: Veronica Reed Course Suitability: General Interest (GI), Intermediate (I), Advanced (A) Venue: GI - Our coastline has a fascinating variety of wildlife living in or just below the tideline. This course explores what can be found there and how our man-made artefacts provide new habitats as well. Other sites to be visited: None Programme/Itinerary: This short programme is suitable for anybody who would like to identify and find out more about the amazing plants and animals that inhabit the area between high and low water on our seashores. Pump Barn, Seven Sisters Country Park, Exceat, Seaford, East Sussex, BN25 4AD. Meet at Pump Barn (behind the Visitor Centre), Seven Sisters Country Park. Walk down the Cuckmere valley to Cliff End and the Seven Sisters. Brief explanation of how the rocky shore at the Seven Sisters was formed. Explore the rockpools and collect specimens of plants and animals living in them. Identify what has been collected. Talk about the ecology of the rocky shoreline. Subjects Covered: Basic rocky shore ecology. Identify plants and animals found along the rocky shoreline at low tide. Look at zonation of plants and animals on the rocky shore at low tide. Find out how plants and animals adapt to living in these harsh conditions. A look at food chains; who eats who and how the different creatures in this area obtain their food. What to bring: Outdoor clothing, sensible foot wear for slippery rocks and rock pooling, snack, water. Other Information: Car parking charges apply Toilets including disabled at Visitor Centre. No toilets on the beach. Public Transport: Nearest train station Seaford. Regular bus service between Eastbourne and Brighton 12, 12A, 12X Fitness Level required: 1½ mile walk down to the beach. Flat – concrete footpath for half the distance and then grass. Footpath wheelchair accessible but not the beach or rockpools.
