Care of Patients with Hematological Disorders
LAP Objective
Upon completion of this LAP you will be able to describe the various disorders
affecting the hematological system. You will also be able to discuss nursing
interventions, diagnostic tests, and treatment for these disorders. This knowledge
will be evidenced by scoring a minimum of 80% on the LAP assignments and exam.
Specific Objectives
1.
Define key terms.
2.
Review normal anatomy and physiology of the hematologic systems,
including that of the elderly.
3.
Differentiate between the various types of blood cells and their functions.
4.
Discuss factors that may alter the function of the hematologic system.
5.
Identify ways in which the nurse might help prevent blood disorders.
6.
Describe at least five different kinds of information that can be obtained from
a complete blood count (CBC).
7.
Describe ways to accomplish hemostasis.
8.
Relate diagnostic test results to the various blood disorders.
9.
Compare the different types of anemia, including their etiology and
pathophysiology, nursing care, and treatment.
10.
Describe pathophysiology, nursing care, and treatment of disorders of the
hematologic system.
11.
Compare the cell abnormalities of polycythemia and leukemia.
12.
Relate the common signs, symptoms, and diagnostic test results to
hemophilia pathophysiology.
13.
Assist with the development of a nursing care plan for the patient with a
hematological disorder.
