Thesis Statements
Your thesis statement should tell the reader exactly
what you will be comparing and contrasting in your
paper…
 Although hundreds of years have passed
since Homer wrote his great epic the
Odyssey, the same values and themes can
still be found in modern day epics such as
George Lucas’s Star Wars: A New Hope.
 An epic involves a long narrative about the
deeds of a hero. Surprisingly, two epics like
Homer’s Odyssey and George Lucas’s Star
Wars: A New Hope, which come from two
completely different time periods, have
many similarities. These similarities show
how society today and hundreds of years
ago can still value some of the same themes.
 Luke Skywalker, a modern day epic hero, and
Odysseus, an ancient Greek epic hero, both
portray similar heroic traits. Although their
tales have been told hundreds of years apart
from each other, we still see many reoccurring
themes.
 Homer’s classic epic the Odyssey tells the
story of Odysseus and his great heroic
adventure. Today, many of the same epic
qualities can be found in the modern day
classic Star Wars: A New Hope.
 Although traits of a hero can change over time
among different civilizations, it is common to
find reoccurring traits and themes in any epic.
Homer’s ancient Greek epic the Odyssey and
George Lucas’s modern day epic Star Wars: A
New Hope show the similarities and differences
in epics over time.
Epic stories contain themes that are timeless.
Explain how and why the elements in these epic
stories transcend time and place.
