IMPORTANT — Please read and keep for future reference Cleaning and Care of Your Cabinets Flory Cabinets is proud to use finishing products that provide an environmentally friendly, yet durable finish. As a natural product, wood will expand and contract slightly with temperature and humidity changes. The finish we apply will allow this slight movement and protect it under most home conditions. It is important to note, though, that the finish is not impervious and can be damaged. However, following the suggestions and precautions below will help to keep your cabinets looking good for a long time. Regularly dust, clean and protect your cabinets. For best results, use a clean, washable, lint-free cotton cloth, such as an old T-shirt, a cotton diaper, or a dishtowel. Make sure the cloth is free of buttons, snaps, zippers, etc., which could harm the finish. Dusting and cleaning: Sprinkle a few drops of water on your dusting cloth. The cloth should be damp, but should not leave the wood visibly wet when you wipe. Remove the dust with a gentle motion that follows the grain of the wood — use a light touch. Do not allow water or other liquids to lay on the surface. Details on the doors and drawers can hold moisture and droplets. If not removed, they can compromise the finish, resulting in haze or dullness and eventual damage. Remove food or other splatters and spills immediately with a cloth slightly dampened with water. Then dry with a dry cloth. Remove dried splatters or spills by carefully softening with a cloth dampened with water until it can be wiped off. Then dry with a dry cloth. Do not use solutions containing bleach, ammonia, or vinegar. Protecting: Avoid exposing cabinets to heat or steam from cooking. This can actually dry out the wood and damage the finish. Frequent cleaning and harsher environments will require you to apply protection more often. However, applying oils or waxes too frequently can result in an undesirable build-up. Apply protection as often as once a month, or up to once every six months, as needed. Avoid products containing silicone or petroleum-distillate solvents. While silicone cleaners create a high degree of shine, silicone seeps into even the highest-quality finishes, making it virtually impossible to re-finish or touch-up your cabinets. We recommend polishes, which may contain detergents, emulsifiers, oils or waxes. The detergents and emulsifiers help clean and the oils and waxes leave behind a barrier to dirt and moisture that could harm finishes. It is often difficult, if not impossible to determine if products contain any of the harmful ingredients mentioned above, as manufacturers are not required to disclose most ingredients in non-food products. However, Johnson’s ENDUST and GUARDSMAN FURNITURE POLISH seem to be safe products. You can also make your own ideal Basic Polishing Cream using the recipe below: 4 ounces oil (2 1/2 ounces olive oil or jojoba, 1 1/2 ounces coconut oil) 1 ounce beeswax 1 ounce carnauba wax 4 ounces distilled water Melt the oils and waxes in a double boiler over medium heat. Remove from the heat, pour in the water, and mix with a hand mixer until thick and creamy. Dab some cream onto a soft cotton rag and rub into the finish. Buff and polish until the oils are well worked into the wood. Keep in cool, dark cabinet. Shelf Life: 6 months to a year.
