Chapter 10 Study Guide
Changes in Matter
 The gaseous state of water is called water vapor.
 Water will freeze when it gets cold enough-changing it from a
liquid to a solid.
 When one or more types of matter are mixed evenly with another
type of matter a solution forms.
 When a solid changes into a liquid, it melts.
 When a gas cools and becomes liquid, it condenses.
 Matter looks different after a physical change, but it is still
made up of the same kind of matter.
 When a material changes into a new kind of matter, a chemical
change takes place.
 When water is heated and bubbles form, it boils.
 When you make fruit salad, you create a mixture.
 When a liquid changes into a gas without boiling, it evaporates.
 A physical change takes place when sand is made into a
sandcastle.
 Changes in shape, state, and size represent various types of
physical changes.
 A change in temperature, color, or the appearance of bubbles
represent types of chemical changes.
 The fact that all matter is made up of tiny particles is what all
matter has in common.
 When water freezes it takes up more space.
