Going from a covalent name to formula guided practice – Not homework – Keep this resource sheet
This is a fairly simple process which is basically the reverse of going from a name to a formula. Our example will be
Dinitrogen Trisulfide
Step 1: Write the chemical symbol of the first element with the corresponding subscript for its prefix
The thing to keep in mind here is that if there is no prefix, then there is no subscript (imaginary 1).
For example with Dinitrogen Trisulfide the Dinitrogen will be N2 as the prefix Di is associated with the subscript 2.
Step 2: Write the chemical symbol of the second element with the corresponding subscript for its prefix.
This time there will always be a prefix, but mono- means you will have no subscript. For example with Dinitrogen
Trisulfide the Trisulfide will be S3 as the prefix Tri is associated with the subscript 3.
Examples:
Silicon Triodide
Dinitrogen Tetrasulfide
Carbon Monoxide
Now you try:
Carbon Hexafluoride
Triarsenic Decabromide
Tellurium Pentachloride
