This is the Second Announcement of the 5th Hellenic Astronomical Conference,
organised by the Hellenic Astronomical Society and the Physics Department,
University of Crete, to be held in Crete, Greece, on the 20-22 September 2001.

1. Location
The conference will take place at the conference center of the
Fodele Beach Hotel which is situated just before Fodele village (the birth place of the
famous painter Theotokopoulos also known as EL GRECO), 20 klm from Heraklion,
on a wooded hill sloping gently down the sea with a private sandy beach, offering a
spectacular view.

above. Your abstracts will be distributed to the convenors of the appropriate session
by the 5th August.

6. Submitted papers
There have been 126 submissions for oral or poster presentations at the
5th Hellenic Astronomical Conference.

If you have submitted a paper but it does not appear in the list, or if you wish to
submit a paper, please send the attached Paper Contribution Form duly filled in, by
the 31th July, to D. Hatzidimitriou , at the contact address given above (preferably by
email). The abstracts should be in English.
7. Proceedings
The LOC will publish the abstracts of the papers that will be presented at the
Conference. The book of abstracts will be available to all participants upon arrival.
8. Transportation
8.1 Travelling to Heraklion:
 By air: There are several daily flights to Heraklion airport from Athens and
Thessaloniki, as well as from some European airports.
 By boat:There are at least two boat trips per day from Pireaus Port to
Heraklion. The overnight trips last about 11 hours (arrival at 7am) with ANEK
Lines , and about 6 hrs with MINOAN Lines (arrival at 4:30am, but possibility
to stay on the boat till 7:30 am). There are also some day trips, usually on
Fridays (Minoan lines, departure at 12:30 noon from Pireaus, arrival at 18:30
at Heraklion).
8.2 Getting to the Conference Location (Fodele)
 By Bus The public bus departs from Heraklion bus station at Heraklion
harbour, at 06.30, 11.30 and 14.30. The times may be different in September.

 By taxi : Cost, about 6000drs, duration about 25 min
8.3 Visa requirements
 Citizens of the European Union do not need a visa to visit Greece
 Holders of a valid VISA SENGΗEN can visit Greece (or any European
country)
 For the following countries no visa is required to visit Greece:
The Vatican, St. Marino, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Switzerland, USA, Japan
Israel, Canada, Cyprus, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, N. Zealand, S. Korea, Honduras,
Hungary, Panama, Paraguay, Polland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Chech Republic, Chile
If you do not belong to the one of the above categories you should get a visa from the
nearest Greek Embassy or Consulate.
9. Accomodation
The Local Organising Committee has secured several rooms and negotiated special
prices with the Fodele Beach Hotel, where the Conference will take place.

Dinner and free drinks all day long).

10. Insurance
All insurance is the responsibility of participants. It is strongly recommended that
overseas participants arrange their own health and accident insurance.
11. Financial assistance
The Local Organizing Committee will be able to offer limited support for travel and
accommodation for Ph.D. students (mostly).
The distribution of available funds to applicants for travel and subsistence support
will be announced to the applicants by the first week of July.
12. Social Events
The Local Organising Committee will organise a visit to the Archaeological Museum
of Heraklion, and possibly to Knossos.
13. Exchange rate
The exchange rate is: 1 EURO = 340drachmas (GDr)

N.B. Room blocks will be reserved at the conference rate and will be allocated on a
first come first serve basis. Costs are Per Person and Half board and a one night
deposit is required with reservations to Mitos. This becomes non-refundable for
cancellations after 1 June 2001 and will be used towards full payment for
accomodation made directly to the hotel on departure. The quoted prices include
