DNA Replication
1. DNA molecules can produce exact copies of themselves.
a. Called REPLICATION.
b. Replication produces two identical DNA molecules.
2. The DNA must replicate so that when a cell divides, each new cell has
the same KIND and AMOUNT of DNA as the original cell had.
3. Replication has four steps.
a. Uncoiling -- a special enzyme unwinds the DNA molecule.
b. Unzipping -- another enzyme separates the nitrogen bases down
the center.
c. Adding new parts -- spare nucleotides match up to the exposed
nitrogen bases. A third enzyme attaches the
nucleotides.
d. Recoiling -- The two new DNA molecules wind back up.
