The idea of national unity was enough to bring about an uprising in 1848, but it
was not enough to bring victory. The ordinary people, who wanted to drive out
the Austrians, were prepared to accept the leadership of Charles Albert. When
the driving force of expelling the Austrians failed, the ordinary people were left
leaderless.
