ROLE SUMMARY
The Nurse (GP Practice) will work as part of a multi-disciplinary primary healthcare team delivering
general medical services and elements of occupational health to military personnel and in some
practices the service personals families.
HOURS:
37.5 hours per week excluding meal breaks
Lunch Break:1 hr between hours of 12-2 by local arrangement
OVERTIME: May be required but will be authorised and requested in advance
LEAVE:
25 days leave (increases to max 31 days depending on relevant length of service) 10.5
days public and privilege holidays.

OBJECTIVES:
The Nurse (GP Practice) will provide appropriate Primary Health Care (PHC) nursing to the medical
facility population at risk in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary primary healthcare team.
The Nurse (GP Practice) is responsible for the delivery of appropriate assessment; planning,
implementation and evaluation of care needs, medical screening and advice to patients within their
professional competence in line with current policy, guidelines and utilising agreed evidence based
practice.
The Nurse (GP Practice) will work within the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of
Professional Conduct and adhere to all NMC standards and MoD policies and guidelines.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Dependant upon qualifications and experience, responsibilities will include:
Clinical Nursing Practice
Maintain written and/or electronic records in accordance with best practice and with regard to
confidentiality in line with the NMC Standards for Record Keeping, Defence Medical Services
(DMS) policy and local guidelines.
For patients with relatively stable health needs, provide appropriate assessment of their needs,
developing individual plans of care. Implement and evaluate individual planned programmes of care
Triage and treat minor injuries/illness as per agreed evidence based practice, Patient Group
Directions (PGD) and adhering to agreed policies and guidelines.
Provision of technical nursing treatments e.g. Venepuncture, ECGs, Eye and Ear Care, Wound
Management/Dressings, Suture Removals, assisting the Medical Officer with Minor Surgery.
Administer immunisation and monitor medications consistent with Surgeon General Policy Letters
(SGPL), Director General Army Medical Services (DGAMS), DPHC policy, PGDs, standards, and
legislation.
Care and Programme Management
Contribute to the planning, implementation and evaluation of health promotion programmes to the
population at risk opportunist and agreed in support of the regional health improvement officer,
SGPL/DGAMS and DMS policy.
Contribute towards preventative health programmes and health screening: opportunist and agreed.
Assisting with and delivering health promotion clinics to include Smoking Cessation, Diet, Alcohol
and Sexual Health in support of policy and guidelines.
Participate in routine Health Surveillance Screening such as PULHHEEMS, Hearing Conservation
Programme and Cervical Smears.
Participate in the provision of a family planning service dependant upon experience and
qualifications.
Participate in care of patients with chronic diseases e.g. asthma, diabetes, hypertension ensuring the
chronic disease register is maintained.
Clinical Practice Development
Support and assist with the implementation of the practice development plan.
Contribute towards the implementation of infection control policies.
Assist with the organisation of the medical facility, maintaining adequate supplies of stocks.
Contribute to clinically auditing practice consistent with the audit plan, assisting with the compiling
of reports and returns.
Participate in the implementation of good practice and current research findings.

Contribute towards the application of Clinical Governance and participate in Significant Events
Analysis (SEA) and the Clinical Risk Register.
Assist with promoting best practice and maintenance of Health and Safety and Security within the
workplace.

Maintain own professional knowledge, training and development needs and registration as per NMC
guidelines and DPHCS Training/Learning Development Plan and policies.
Engage in regular Clinical Supervision.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Essential:
Registered Nurse with live registration on Parts 1 or 12 of the NMC Register
Willingness to undertake specific training to fulfil competency for role (e.g. audiometry, ear care,
minor illness/injury, physical assessment and history taking, travel health) and DPHC/MOD training
as appropriate)

EXPERIENCE
Essential:
A minimum of 2 years post registration experience in addition to specified
qualifications.
Desirable:
Recent experience in primary health care practice and/or secondary healthcare;
immunisation; minor illness/injury or A&E; physical assessment and history taking; family planning;
travel health; military medical healthcare; cervical cytology.
