Surges and Spikes are an
increase in “normal”
electrical line voltage that
can cause serious damage
to equipment.

Surges can be present on
any metallic conductor
including utility power lines,
telephones, computer data
lines, CCTV and CATV cable
feeds.

Lightning Transients

Utility Grid/Capacitor
Switching

Inductive Loads
The effects of surges and spikes are:
of Equipment – gradual
deterioration of internal circuitry
 Degradation
 Destruction – resulting in expensive
equipment replacement costs
 Downtime – lost productivity, loss of life

Reduced Downtime

Reduced Non-Billable Service Calls

Increased Profits

Surge protectors shunt the voltage
surge to ground

A good ground is imperative

NEC code maximum resistance at
ground is 25 Ohms
Whatever equipment your customer
can’t afford to lose.

What is the type of equipment to protect?
2.
What is the maximum continuous operating
voltage (MCOV)?
3.
What is the maximum current?
4.
How many conductors or wires?
5.
How does the application terminate?
1.
ABC RULE – The conductor length between ‘A’ (your equipment) and ‘B’
(DITEK) should be greater than the conductor length between ‘B’ (DITEK) and
‘C’ (Ground Rod)
A---------------------------------------------B----------------C
Equipment
DITEK
Ground Reference
2.
THREE FOOT RULE – The conductor length between ‘A’ and ‘B’ should be 3-6
feet
3.
PARALLEL CONNECTION RULE – Keep conductor to ground as short and
straight as possible
4.
GROUND RESISTANCE RULE – Max ground resistance is 25 ohms. Five
ohms or less preferred
5.
BONDED GROUND RULE – In a system with multiple ground rods, the rods
should be directly connected with no equipment in ground path
6.
PMI – PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE INSPECTIONS – Should be monthly
and immediately following local lightning strikes
Suggested Grounding Points
(ranked by optimum performance)
1. Grounded Building Steel
2. Electrical Service Ground
3. Cold Water Pipe (verify no PVC!)
4. Dedicated Driven Rod
5. Local Electrical Ground
TIP: Always verify the quality of the ground – never assume!
