Extra key terms for chapter 4
1. Selective permeability- process by which the cell
membrane allows some molecules into a cell while
keeping other molecules out.
2. Turgor pressure- a cell’s water pressure is increased as
in a hypotonic solution.
3. Plasmolysis- loss of water from a plant cell resulting in
a drop in turgor pressure.
4. Contractile vacuole- organelles that collect excess water
inside the plant cell and force the water out.
5. Phagocytosis- cell engulfs large particles or whole cells.
(such as white blood cells engulfing bacteria)
6. Pinocytosis- cell engulfs solutes from fluids.
5 and 6 are types of endocytosis.
