5 Themes of Geography
1. Location
 Absolute – Latitude and longitude.
 Relative – Comparison to other places. Directional.
2. Place
 Physical Characteristics – Description of mountains, rivers, beaches, etc.
Also includes descriptions of animal and plant life.
 Human Characteristics – How humans use the land, architecture,
religions, food, and customs in the region.
3. Human/Environment Interaction
 How humans adapt to the environment and how humans change the
environment.
 Both positive and negative effects can occur.
4. Movement
 Migration of humans (moving to and from places).
 How ideas, goods, resources, and communication travel distances
(whether locally or globally).
5. Region
 Dividing the world into smaller units in order to better study them.
 Regions have similar characteristics that unify them.
 Regions can be formal, functional, or vernacular:
o Formal – Designated by official boundaries (i.e. state lines).
o Functional – Defined by their connections (i.e. newspaper delivery
areas, how far pizza shops will deliver a pizza).
o Vernacular – Perceived regions (i.e. “The South”, “The Midwest”).
There is no formal boundary, only what people visualize.
