English 11 Due Date: Propaganda Project (In Animal Farm and Advertising) Propaganda: Information, often of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a particular cause or point of view, with the intention of manipulating the truth and the audience it is directed towards. Propaganda, as it is used in Animal Farm, distorts and deceives in order to manipulate the animals. These same techniques are used in advertising aimed at teens and adults. Part 1: A) Find quotations or examples that display the following types of propaganda in Animal Farm a) Rewriting History (distortion or falsification of past events) b) Use of Fear or Threat c) Testimonials (an average animal speaks of the greatness of the Revolution or its leaders). d) The “Bandwagon” (Everyone is doing this. You should too!) Use the worksheets provided to find six examples. B) Produce 2 visual examples of propaganda from Animal Farm with a slogan representing the viewpoints of either Snowball, Napoleon/Squealer, or the Humans. Label what type of propaganda is used. Explain each on looseleaf. Part 2: A) Find 2 examples of advertisements that use some of the devices or techniques listed above. On looseleaf explain propaganda and what type of technique is used. B) Design an advertising campaign. Choose a product or service to promote but do not use ads that already exist. Use 4 different techniques, from the list, and design 4 different ads. You may use posters, pamphlets, a t-shirt, radio ads, TV ads, etc. Explain each ad showing how it is “selling” the product or service. Pass in all steps –examples of propaganda, worksheets, etc –do cover page
