Parts of the Cell
cell membrane
-forms outer boundary of the cells
- semi-permeable – only lets certain things
in and out of the cell
- made of a layer of phospholipids and
some proteins (lipid bilayer)
cell wall
- provide strength and support
- made out of cellulose fibers
- only found in plants cells
cytoplasm
- gel-like fluid
- made of water and other chemicals
- always moving or circulating around the
cell
- surrounds all the organelles
nucleus
- largest (usually) & most visible organelle
- stores DNA in chromatin (chromatids)
- directs all other activities in the cell
(control center)
nucleolus
- inside the nucleus
- stores materials used to make ribosomes
ribosomes
- most abundant organelle
- smallest organelle
- make proteins from amino acids (using
directions from the nucleus)
- can be found in the cytoplasm or on the
endoplasmic reticulum
endoplasmic reticulum (or E.R.)
- folded membrane that moves materials
around the cell (like a conveyer belt)
- 2 types: rough – has ribosomes on it &
smooth – doesn’t have ribosomes on it
mitochondria
- bean shaped
- breaks down food into energy (ATP)
- “powerhouse of the cell”
- more active cells (muscle cells)
have more mitochondria
chloroplasts
- only in plant cells
- insides look like stacks of coins
- contains chlorophyll
- uses sunlight to make sugar
(photosynthesis)
Golgi body
- stacks of membrane-covered sacs
(or Golgi complex or
(looks like E.R.)
Golgi apparatus)
- process and transport materials
out of the cell (shipping department)
- named for Camillo Golgi (1898)
vacuole
- membrane-covered chambers
- storage areas (like a warehouse)
- stores food, water or waste products
- larger in plant cells than in animal cells
- liquid in vacuoles gives flowers their
color
lysosome
- contain digestive enzymes
- break down wastes, worn-out cell parts,
& foreign invaders
- when a cell dies lysosomes break them
down
- breaks down tadpoles’ tails when they
turn into frogs
