Chem 160
In-class worksheet 6 Mar 2008
A. Give the systematic name for the following coordination compounds:
1. K3Fe(CN)6
Potassium hexacyanoferrate(III)
2. [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2
Pentaamminechlorocobalt(III) chloride
B. Given the following systematic names, give the formula of each coordination
compound.
1. Potassium hexafluorocobaltate(III)
K3CoF6
2. triamminechloroethylenediaminechromium(III) iodide
[Cr(NH3)3Cl(en)]I2
C. Amino acids can act as ligands toward transition metal ions. The simplest amino acid
is glycine (NH2CH2CO2H). Draw a structure of the glycinate anion (NH2CH2CO2-)
acting as a bidentate ligand. Then, draw the structural isomers of the square planar
complex Cu(NH2CH2CO2)2.
Wish I could draw this on here – I drew a bit of it on the board in class. If you want me
to draw it again for you, just ask.
D. The compound Pt(NH3)2Cl2 has a square planar structure, and therefore has both a cis
and a trans isomer. One is polar, and the other is not. Which of the isomers is polar?
Explain why.
This is also something that bears drawing. However, there is a picture of each isomer in
the book on page 886.
The cis isomer is polar, because one side of the molecule is more electronegative than the
other. In the trans isomer, the more electronegative chlorines are distributed more
evenly throughout the molecular structure, and thus the overall compound is not polar.
