Course title Genetics Course code PMB023 Type of course Lectures Level of course Basic course Year of study 2. year ECTS (Number of credits allocated) 3,5 ECTS Name of lecturer Dr. Jasna Puizina, assistant professor Learning outcomes and competences At the end of the course the learner is expected to know the structure and organization of genetic material, mechanisms of transmission and regulation of the genetic information. The learner will know the most important achievements of applied genetics. The knowledge obtained in this course is important for further understanding of Molecular biology. Cell Biology Prerequisites Course contents Recommended reading Supplementary reading Teaching methods Assessment methods Language of instruction Quality assurance methods Semester/trimester 4. semester Genes and chromosomes. Mendel’s laws and chromosomal basis of inheritance. Sex chromosomes and sex-linked inheritance. Interactions between alleles and genes: incomplete dominance, codominance, lethal alleles, epistasis, suppression, penetrance. Linkage, meiotic recombination and mapping in Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes. Cytogenetics: variations in chromosome structure and number, evolution of the genome. Molecular genetics: structure of DNA, replication, transcription, translation. Organization of the human genome: unique sequences, introns, egzons, alternative splicing, gene duplications, gene families, pseudogenes, repetitive sequences, movable genetic elements. Human genome project. Control of gene expression, chromatin modification, parental imprinting. Non-mendelian inheritance. Quantitative inheritance. Population genetics. Ethic dilemmas in genetics: eugenetics, privacy of genetic information, loss of genetic variability. 1. Tamarin, R.H: Principles of Genetics. Šesto izdanje. WCB, McGraw-Hill, 1999. 2. Students participate in discussion and asking questions. Two partial tests during attending the lectures. If the learner has been successfully passed both partial tests, he is free of written exam. Successfully passed exam form Practical form Genetics is prerequisite for taking the exam from Genetics. Examination is oral and written. Croatian and English. Student’s questionnaires.
