AP Chemistry – Bomb Calorimetry On-Line Lab
Name______________________________
Use the following web site: http://www.chm.davidson.edu/ronutt/che115/bomb/bomb.htm
Burn 2 g of each of the following compounds in a bomb calorimeter. When you get to the
web site, look for the Java applet – a place where you can insert the grams and then press
start. It will show you how the sample is placed in the bomb calorimeter and you must the
press ignite. You are going to record the final temperature so you can make some
calculations.

PLEASE SHOW your work at the bottom of this page and then record your answers in the
above data table.
Sample calculations and formulas:
1) To find q calorimeter:
q cal = heat capacity of calorimeter x temperature change
(remember q stands for heat)
q rxn = - q cal (if temp change is positive – heat is given
off)
2) Find ∆H using the molar mass of the substance you are testing (remember ∆H = kJ/mol)
** Note: Assume the heat capacity of the calorimeter = 5.15 kJ/deg C
