Here is an easy-to-use, reliable test of posttraumatic stress and other psychological sequelae of traumatic
events, such as rape, spouse abuse, physical assault, combat, major accidents, natural disasters, and
childhood abuse.
The TSI includes 100 items on 10 clinical scales, under 3 broad categories of distress--Trauma, Self, and
Dysphoria. These scales are:
Anxious Arousal
Depression
Anger/Irritability
Intrusive Experiences
Defensive Avoidance
Tension Reduction
Dissociation Behavior
Sexual Concerns
Dysfunctional Sexual Behavior
Impaired Self-Reference
In addition, 3 validity scales assess the respondent's tendency to deny symptoms commonly endorsed by
others, to overendorse unusual or bizarre symptoms, and to respond in an inconsistent or random manner.
The inclusion of 12 Critical Items helps you identify problems that may require immediate intervention--such
as suicidal ideation, substance abuse, psychosis, and self-mutilation.
The TSI can be completed in about 20 minutes by any adult who can read at a 5th-grade level. Norms are
based on a nationally representative sample of more than 800 adults from the general population and more
than 3,500 Navy recruits. They are separated by sex and by age (18 to 54 and 55+ years), making the TSI
appropriate for all adult sex-by-age combinations.
The TSI has demonstrated 90% accuracy in predicting PTSD in an independently assessed sample. Used with
a psychiatric inpatient sample, the scale correctly identified 89% of those patients independently diagnosed
with Borderline Personality Disorder. Quick, reliable, and easy-to-use, the TSI is a cost-effective way to
evaluate acute and chronic posttraumatic symptoms.
