The Institute of Ethnography of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts is the central
national research institution engaging in systematic ethnological and anthropological study of
Serbian culture, both within the country-s borders and abroad.
The projects realized by the Institute center around the study of both historical and
contemporary social processes and phenomena dealing with different types of individual and
collective identity strategies.
Short Description
of the
Organization /
Department
Researchers employed by the Institute of Ethnography are focused on the research of
traditional and modern patterns and values within the national culture (material, social and
spiritual), and establishing regularities within the processes of cultural change caused by local
and global transformations and social, economic and political flows. The research strategies
utilized by the Institute of Ethnography entail the continuing modernization and improvement
of research methods and theories, as well as work on regional, thematic and general
ethnological/anthropological themes and issues.
The Institute of Ethnography of the SASA has compiled and published a large body of
ethnographic data and organized numerous scientific conferences. International cooperation
and a vibrant publishing endeavor are nurtured continually. The hard work of generations of
diligent researchers and scientists has gone into the foundations of the Institute as it is today –
a modern, open and perspective institution for scientific research.

Are young men in Serbia ready for warfare?
- Patriotism, traditional values and “real life” in identity praxes of Serbian youthMedia images that we receive on daily bases suggest that globe looks like powder keg ready to explode.
People who have directly or indirectly faced war, can imagine and are probably thinking of how
possible large-scale conflict would look like. People in Balkans probably hope that main reservoir and
battle field is not going to be in the region again.
I am particularly interested to research if and how young people (16-25) in Serbia think about war – be
it of local or global nature. We know that these generations even did not play war games, except those in
virtual world and that for them, the most horrible disaster would be collapse of electric power supply.
On the other hand, from the side of political elites, appeared initiative for reestablishing obligatory
military service. Public discourses on this matter manipulate with historical heritage and traditional
identity praxes. One should accept to be solder and to serve fatherland having on mind glorious
traditions of Serbian Army in Balkan, First and Second World Wars and because being a warrior, solder
and defender of country is important part of male identity.
My research would try discover what young people, primarily young men, think about these traditions,
about war, about current geo-political situation on Balkans and in the world, what influences their
perception of identity, to which tradition, if any, they refer when we talk about gender roles…would
they go to war?
