Example of an open-ended math problem using the math rubric:
Example of a 4:
3 5/16 – 2 1/8
To find the difference of 2 1/8 from 3 5/16, I find equivalent fractions using the LCD
(least common denominator) of 8 and 16. Next, I subtract the whole numbers, 2 from 3
to get 1, and then subtract the fractions 2/16 from 5/16 to get 3/16. Then I add the whole
number, 1, to the fraction 3/16 to get 1 3/16.
Example of a 3:
3 5/16 – 2 1/8
To find the answer of 2 1/8 from 3 5/16, I find equivalent fractions using the LCD. Next
I subtract my whole numbers to get 1, and then I subtract my fractions to get 3/16. Then
I add the whole number to the fraction to get 1 3/16.
Example of a 2:
3 5/16 – 2 1/8
3 5/16 – 2 1/8 I first need to get the same fractions then subtract. Then 3 – 2 to get 1.
Then 5/16 – 2/16 to get 3/16. So 3 5/16 – 2 1/8 = 1 3/16.
Example of a 1:
3 5/16 – 2 1/8
3 5/16 – 2 1/8 you first need to get the same fractions. Then subtract the 3 – 2 and that
will give you 1 3/16.
Example of a 0:
3 5/16 – 2 1/8
3 5/16 – 2 1/8 = 1 4/8 or 1 1/2. Just subtract the 3 – 2 and 5/16 – 1/8 then reduce to 1 1/2.
