Design your own postcard about ONE of your favorite animals.
Paper Set Up:
Using PowerPoint: Use one slide and insert textboxes and images
Include: Check off each item when finished.
o A PICTURE of your favorite organism
o Your organism’s COMMON NAME
o Your organism’s SCIENTIFIC NAME
o Remember the scientific name is the Genus + species
o Scientific name is underlined (try out these sites: http://seaworld.org/en/animal-info/animal-bytes/
or http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu )
o Finds the meaning of the Latin species name. (go to http://archives.nd.edu/latgramm.htm ) The meaning
of the names can also be found by researching. The meaning of the names can also be found by
researching. It is usually in parenthesis (ie. King penguin - Aptenodytes patagonicus – “winged diver”)
o For example, Homo sapiens, sapiens means “wise one” in Latin
o List your organism’s full classification, including Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
o Include a minimum of 3 characteristics of the organism’s Kingdom, 3 for Phylum, and 3 for Class
o List which countries your animal is found
o One FUN FACTS and ONE interesting ADAPTATIONS that your organism has for survival
