Unit 4 Vocabulary Words (Math 7) 1. Acute Angle An angle measures less than 90o. 2. Angle The figure formed by two rays with a common endpoints. 3. Bisector A point, (or segment, ray, or line) that divides a segment or an angle into two congruent parts. 4. Congruent Having the same size and shape 5. Coordinate Plane A plane formed by the intersection of a horizontal number line called the x-axis and a vertical line called a y-axis. 6. Corresponding Angles Matching angles of two or more polygons. 7. Corresponding Sides Matching sides of two or more polygons. 8. Endpoint Point at the end of a line segment or ray. 9. Intersection The point common to two or more geometric figures. (The points where segments, rays and lines intersect). 10. Line A straight path that extends without end in opposite directions. 11. Line Segment A part of a line between two endpoints. 12. Obtuse Angles Angles that measures more than 90o but less than 18o. 13. Parallel Lines Lines in a plane that do not intersect. 14. Perpendicular Lines Lines, line segments or rays that intersect to form right angles. 15. Plane A perfectly flat surface that extends infinitely in all directions. 16. Point An exact location in space. It is usually represented as a dot, but it has no size at all. 17. Ray A part of a line that stars at one endpoint and extends forever. 18. Reflection A transformation of a figure that flips the figure across a line. 19. Right Angle An angle that measures exactly 90o. 20. Rotation A transformation in which a figure is turned around a point. 21. Symmetry Correspondence of form and arrangement of parts on opposite sides of a boundary, such as a plane, line, or around a point or axis. 22. Transformation A change in the position or orientation of a figure. 23. Translation A movement (slide) of a figure along a straight line. 24. Triangle A three sided polygon. 25. Vertex On an angle or polygon, the point where two sides intersect. Line symmetry – A figure has line symmetry if one-half is a mirror image of the other half. Rotational symmetry – A figure has rotational symmetry if it can be rotated less than 360o around a central point and coincide with the original figure.
