Algebra I

Course Description: Founded by two Harvard educated brothers, Greg and Shawn Sabouri, Teaching Textbooks was designed
specifically for homeschoolers. The text is self-explanatory for independent learners, and includes hundreds of hours of CDROM teaching. Students will work through 129 lessons broken up into 17 chapters. Topics include: simple and 2nd degree
equations, negative numbers, dealing with variables in equations and fractions, powers, roots, graphing, measuring change,
systems of equations and inequalities.

Course Description: Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces is a Web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and
learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't
know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course,
ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in
their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions. Curriculum included 211 topics.

Course Description: This course was designed to prepare for taking the SAT with a special emphasis on math.

Text: Algebra and Trigonometry, 4th edition, by Judith Beecher, Judith Penna, Marvin Bittinger
Course Description: In this course students will complete the first half of Algebra and Trigonometry, 4th edition covering
topic including basic concepts of algebra; graphs, functions, and models; quadratic functions and equations; inequalities;
polynomial functions and rational functions and exponential functions and logarithmic functions. This course is known for
enabling students to “see the math” through its focus on visualization and early introduction to functions. It also incorporates the
MyMathLab course with online content that is even more integrated with the text’s approach.

assignments

Science
Meteorology - Kingdom Builders Homeschool Co-op
Text: The Atmosphere: An Introduction to Meteorology, 9th edition, by Frederick K. Lutgens
Course Description: This course was designed to help students master a general understanding of the atmosphere and provide
them with an introduction to meteorology. Ellen learned the basic elements of a weather observation, how to take a weather
observation and basic weather analysis. A lab book was kept and graded.
Method for Learning: Participated in a 30 week class at Kingdom Builders co-op meeting one hour and 45 minutes each week
for 15 labs, lectures, project presentations and guest speakers. Completed reading assignments, course work, project preparation
and tests at home. A lab notebook was carefully maintained and more than 80 % of the 15 module tests were administered in
class.
Method of Evaluation: The grade for this course was given by co-op teacher Susan Bowers, a trained and practicing
meteorologist, and was based on test grades, lab and notebook grades, completion of work and participation.
Biology - Kingdom Builders Homeschool Co-op
Text: Apologia Biology by Dr. Jay Wiles
Course Description: This course is designed to be the student’s first high school science course and is a college-prep biology
course that provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general biology. Heavily emphasizing the vocabulary
of biology, it provides the student with a strong background in the scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme,
microscopy, biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, evolution, dissection, and ecosystems. It also
provides a complete survey of the five kingdoms in Creation. Students who take and understand this course will be very wellprepared for a tough university biology course.

Chemistry - Kingdom Builders Homeschool Co-op
Text: Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Chemistry, by Dr. Jay Wiles.
Course Description: This was a high school chemistry course that gave Ellen a rigorous foundation in chemistry. The course
covered significant figures, units, classification, the mole concept, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics,
acids and bases, redox reactions, solutions, atomic structure, Lewis structures, molecular geometry, the gas laws, and
equilibrium. Labs and the lab notebook were a large part of this course.
Method for Learning: Participated in a 30 week class at Kingdom Builders co-op meeting one hour and 45 minutes each week
for 19 labs, lectures, project presentations and guest speakers. Completed reading assignments, course work, project preparation
and tests at home. More than 80 % of the 15 module tests were administered in class.

Forensic Science - Kingdom Builders Homeschool Co-op
Text: Forensic Science for High School, by Barbara Deslich & John Funkhouser
Course Description: The Kingdom Builders High School Forensic Science class is a challenging high school science course.
This class focuses on practices and analysis of physical evidence found at crime scenes and the application of science to law. The
fundamental objective is to learn the basic processes and principles of scientific thinking and apply them to solve problems that
are not only science related, but cross the science spectrum with critical thinking skills.
This High School Forensic Science
course consisted of both physical science units and biology units. The physical science units were comprised of class and
laboratory activities which applied principles and techniques of chemistry, physics, statistics, and geology to the identification
and comparison of crime scene evidence (such as drugs, alcohol, poisons, glass, paint and soil). The biology units dealt with the
identification and grouping of dried blood stains, the identification of human versus animal blood, blood typing of human blood,
comparison of hair and fiber, fingerprint analysis, DNA analysis and more.
Method for Learning: Participated in a 30 week class at Kingdom Builders co-op meeting one hour and 45 minutes each week
for a total of 18 labs, lectures, project presentations and guest speakers. Completed reading assignments, course work, project
preparation and tests at home.

Course Description: This course is a survey of World literature starting in ancient times and ending in the Modern Era.
Students are exposed to classical literature from a variety of writers from Russia, Germany, China, France, Great Britain,
America, Italy, Norway, and Greece. Emphasis is placed on literary criticism and the understanding of literary terms in the
context of literary criticism. Students also read three major novels from authors of World Masterpieces of World literature and
the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare.
Composition includes mastering the SAT persuasive essay, mastering the expository essay, and a variety of other genres
such as free verse poetry, rhyming poetry, and dramatic monologues. Students are also required to write a research paper on one
of the authors or literary works from their study of World literature. Extensive vocabulary , English grammar skills, and
SAT/ACT verbal prep are also included in this course.

Course Description: This course is a survey of British literature from the Middle Ages through the Modern Era, covering four
major literary periods and focusing on the political, historical, and intellectual background of each period. Much emphasis is

Text: Switched-on-Schoolhouse Secondary Spanish, Alpha Omega
Course Description: This course introduces the student to the Spanish language, including basic greetings, numbers, calendar
terms, weather, present tense and past perfect tense verb conjugation of regular and irregular verbs, basic grammatical and
cultural concepts, and a lot of vocabulary. The emphasis at this level is on listening comprehension and recognition, as well as
beginning speaking skills. The student will be expected to progress through the program at home following the class syllabus.
There will also be many web-links and additional handouts provided to supplement the computer program. Class time will be
spent reviewing the week’s material and practicing speaking skills.

syllabus. There are many web-links and additional handouts provided to supplement the computer program. Class time has a
strong emphasis on spoken Spanish and translation, along with review of the week’s material and an opportunity for questions
and conversational practice.

Course Description: This course begins with creation and emphasizes the early cultures of the Egyptians, Hebrews,
Greeks, Roman and related peoples.. Students study in detail the beginnings of each civilization and the effect of each
on the culture of its time. Students are required to critically assess comparisons between these ancient cultures and our
modern culture and current events. Students will also understand the importance of physical geographic features on
world historic events and learn to read various maps and identify several countries from memory.

Course Description: This course is a survey of World literature starting in ancient times and ending in the Modern Era.
Students are exposed to classical literature from a variety of writers from Russia, Germany, China, France, Great Britain,
America, Italy, Norway, and Greece. Emphasis is placed on literary criticism and the understanding of literary terms in
the context of literary criticism. Students also read three major novels from authors of World Masterpieces of World
literature and the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare.
Composition includes mastering the SAT persuasive essay, mastering the expository essay, and a variety of other genres
such as free verse poetry, rhyming poetry, and dramatic monologues. Students are also required to write a research
paper on one of the authors or literary works from their study of World literature. Extensive vocabulary , English
grammar skills, and SAT/ACT verbal prep are also included in this course.

Course Description: In Government, we will discuss the evolvement of our great nation from a British colony, to a young
fledgling confederation, to a powerful nation. We will review the background of the American government including
the Magna Carta, Articles of Confederation, and Declaration of Independence. We will discuss the United States
Constitution in depth. Next we will bring the discussion of government from a national level to a state and local level
with discussion on state governments, state budgets, government taxation and government spending. We will expand
our view of government with international relations, our membership in the United Nations, and the effect of
government on international trade. The students will be challenged to take a vested interest in their government and
even consider holding elected office. 2012 is an election year for our nation, state, as well as local municipalities. We
will discuss the effects of the elections on the nation and individual Americans.
