YEAR 11 ICT SAS
UNIT:
Computer Graphics and Hardware
UNIT OVERVIEW
The focus of this unit is to equip students with the tools and techniques to manipulate
and create graphics especially for use within a web development context. Students will
be able to use graphic design principals such as CARP to create industry standard
designs (for example moodboards, webpage banners and logos). Images produced in
this unit will be used as content in the ‘How to build a personal computer web-site’
unit next term. Computer hardware and how to build a personal computer will be
explored as part of the content knowledge.
ASSESSMENT:
An individual e-folio project completed over 4 weeks assessing the three dimensions of:
Knowing and understanding, Analysing and applying, and Producing and evaluating.
The e-folio will be a body of work that can be used as image content in a ‘Guide to
building a computer’ website the student will develop next term.

Learning Goal
Computer Hardware and Building a PC. Identify
components required to build a PC and draw a
schematic of slots/ports where components connect.
Success Criteria
(I Know I’ve got it when I can …)
Recall and recognise the major components of a
personal computer.
Realise how simple it is and inexpensive to build your
own PC.

construction and image file formats.
Recall and explain terminology concepts that relate to
this unit.
Design Principles
CARP design principles. What is a web page design
document, moodboard, webpage banner, web layout,
site map?
Apply the CARP principals
Photoshop
Selection tools – marquee, lasso, magnetic lasso, magic
wand and quick selection. Editing cut images by
creating feathered edges and transparent
backgrounds.
Making image adjustments (size, contrast, levels) and
transformations (free transform, rotate, skew, distort)
of duplicated layers. Saving for web and devices.
Using Masks.
Use selection tools and edit selections
Photoshop
Create gradient backgrounds. Cloning tool. Text tool.
Layer effects. Creating copyright free images and
colour replacement. Using filters.
Create copyright free images.
Photoshop
Creating vector graphics using shape primitives, pen
toolset and sub-selection.
Evaluation skills, prototyping (image versioning) and
CIPP.
Use the CIPP paradigm to evaluate your work.
Illustrator
Creating web backgrounds using the symbol toolset.
Creating graphical title text- pencil, text, direct
selection, strokes & fills, brush tool.
Create Web backgrounds
Fireworks
Create rollover buttons with shadow and 3D effects
using shapes, textures, fills, strokes, colours.
Create button images for use in websites
Recognise the use of the 4 CARP design principals.

formats .jpg, .png, .gif
Create title text.
Create web backgrounds.
Create and edit vector images.
