Essay Questions: English II Honors Midterm Exam
(40 points)
Choose one of the following topics. Write a well-organized essay, addressing the topic
completely. Be sure to follow all rules of form, point of view, grammar, and
conventions.
1. Consider the character of Oedipus in the light of Aristotle’s definition of a tragic hero.
Do you agree that Oedipus’s misfortune is brought about by “some error of judgment or
frailty” or do you have a different interpretation? Be sure to include specific, text-based
examples to support your points.
2. One function of literature, particularly myths, is that they reflect the beliefs and values
of a culture. What cultural beliefs and values are conveyed in Greek myths and
tragedies? Use specific examples to support your points.
3. The plot of Oedipus Rex builds with irresistible force to a climax when Oedipus
discovers the truth about his identity and his past actions. Why do you think that the play
does not end with the revelation of the truth and Oedipus’ self-blinding? What is the
dramatic function of the final meeting between Oedipus and Creon?
