Welcome to Our Classroom!!! Math with Mrs. Tkacs and Mr. Kleinman, Room 13 A Little Bit About Mrs. Tkacs… Second year teacher Graduated from Rowan University; Dual Major, Elementary Education and Liberal Studies: Social Sciences, Sequences in Physics and Chemistry and History Certified to teach K-6, Middle School Math, Middle School Social Studies, and Middle School Science Mother of two (my son is in sixth grade too!) More about Mr. Kleinman… Has been teaching in the district for 28 years Works with both Mrs. Tkacs and Mr. Benziger upstairs Provides extra support and instruction for students (ASI) Works in both small group and whole class settings May pull students during class time or extension for one on one or small group instruction Our 6A Team Tkacs, Kleinman, and Galasso for Math Dennion, MacDonald, and Fitzgerald for Language Arts Mielcarek for Science McCloughan for Social Studies All work together closely to meet the needs of our individual students Have weekly meetings to discuss curriculum and students Classroom Expectations Each day, students are required to bring the following… Math binder with homework folder Do Now notebook Textbook (stays in classroom) Pencil, dry erase marker, eraser (sock) Netbook fully charged Rules and Consequences See classroom rules poster on wall (the golden rule!) Consequences of breaking rules: verbal warning, contact parent, lunch detention, sent to principal I will first email a parent. If I do not get a response, I will call. If severe, I will call. Positive Reinforcement: homework incentive board, Give Me Five Daily Routine Do Now Review homework Learn new content Practice= Work in groups or with partners, collaborate to tackle new information Work independently to practice new skills Math Centers or Extension Activities Math Websites Homework Should only take about 15 minutes to complete homework each night Workbook left at home; students rip out pages and bring in daily. Written in planner and also posted on website (use only as backup) Graded on completeness, not correctness Will be reviewed daily Math Centers Works on concepts that students have already learned but need more practice with Ran during extension period Students will be grouped and groups will rotate around centers Gives myself and Mr. Kleinman a chance to pull small groups for more intense instruction Centers: M= Multimedia (Netbooks or Smart Board) A= At your seat (individual work) T= Teacher’s Choice (small group or elsewhere) H= Hand’s On (Hands on activities or games to be done with partners) Grading Policy 40% Tests 30% Quizzes 15% Homework 15% Classwork and Projects *You may check students grades 24/7 on Power School. Tests and Quizzes No pop quizzes! Students will receive study guides or reviews for tests. Corrections can be made to any test or quiz lower than a 70, though must be signed by a parent and returned. Content Covered During 6th Grade Grade 6 Overview Ratios and Proportional Relationships Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems. The Number System Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions. Multiply and divide multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples. Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers. Expressions and Equations Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions. Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities. Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables. Geometry Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume. Statistics and Probability Develop understanding of statistical variability. Summarize and describe distributions. Grade 7 Overview Ratios and Proportional Relationships Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems. The Number System Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers. Expressions and Equations Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. Solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations. Geometry Draw, construct and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships between them. Solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface area, and volume. Statistics and Probability Use random sampling to draw inferences about a population.
